Role Description The Underwriter will be responsible for evaluating, pricing, and underwriting a wide range of dealership-related risks. This includes working with retail agents, specialty carriers, and internal teams to generate profitable growth, maintain underwriting discipline, and support production goals. You will manage an established book of business and help expand our footprint in the franchise dealership space. Job Responsibilities: - Core Underwriting Duties - Underwrite new and renewal Dealers Open Lot (DOL) business for franchised automobile, truck, and boat dealerships. - Evaluate submissions to determine acceptable risk, appropriate pricing, coverage terms, limits, and conditions. - Manage and grow an existing book of business while achieving profitability and production targets. - Administer and monitor underwriting rules, guidelines, and compliance with state laws and insurance regulations. - Maintain strong underwriting judgment and decision-making authority. - Coverages Handled - Comprehensive & Collision - False Pretense - Economic Loss - Weather Reimbursement - Spot Delivery Coverage - Other Auto Dealership specialty coverages as applicable - Sales, Marketing & Relationship Management - Prospect and develop new business through strong relationships with retail agents, MGAs, wholesalers, and carrier underwriters. - Market and sell wholesale insurance solutions to meet production goals. - Build and maintain carrier relationships to ensure competitive pricing and access to broader markets. - Pre-qualify submissions and prioritize high-probability opportunities. - Risk Analysis & Client Solutions - Analyze exposures and underwriting data to determine best carrier, coverage options, forms, and premium. - Identify additional areas of exposure and cross-selling opportunities for clients. - Stay informed on industry trends, market conditions, pricing shifts, and emerging risks within the dealership sector. - Educate partners on the full range of Ryan Specialty risk solutions. - Team Leadership (As Assigned) - Provide training, mentorship, and oversight to underwriting assistants or support staff. - Collaborate with leadership on process improvements and business development strategies. - Travel as required for client visits, carrier meetings, and industry events. Qualifications - 3+ years of underwriting experience, ideally in Dealers Open Lot, Commercial Auto, Property, Casualty, or Excess & Surplus Lines. - Experience with franchised automobile dealership risks strongly preferred. - Strong technical knowledge of dealership coverages, pricing models, and risk characteristics. - Proven ability to grow and manage a profitable book of business. - Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills. - Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume underwriting environment. - CPCU, AU, AINS, or other industry certifications a plus.
