Job Description

Senior Legal Counsel – IP, AI

Welltech

• Own Welltech's global IP portfolio—trademarks, copyright, trade secrets, and patents—including registration, maintenance, and enforcement strategy across key markets (US, EU, UK). • Serve as first responder on IP disputes and infringement matters: assess cease-and-desist letters, coordinate with external IP counsel, and develop substantive response strategy. • Conduct IP clearance reviews for new product features, creative assets, app store submissions, and marketing campaigns. • Advise on copyright protection for proprietary content (exercise programmes, wellness content, onboarding flows) and assess compilation copyright and originality thresholds. • Build and maintain internal IP playbooks, training materials, and triage frameworks to enable the broader team to identify and escalate IP risk early. • Manage outside IP counsel relationships and spend efficiently, with a preference for internalising where possible. • Serve as subject matter expert on emerging AI regulation—EU AI Act, GDPR Article 22, US state-level AI legislation, and sector-specific guidance for health/wellness applications. • Lead legal reviews for AI-powered product features, including personalisation engines, recommendation algorithms, dynamic pricing systems, and generative AI tooling. • Advise on data minimisation, transparency, and non-discrimination obligations applicable to algorithmic systems that may process sensitive health or demographic data. • Collaborate with Privacy Counsel on DPIA requirements for AI initiatives, including where AI systems are used in data-driven acquisition, segmentation, or onboarding. • Track and translate regulatory developments (EU AI Act implementation, FTC guidance, UK DSIT AI frameworks) into actionable internal guidance and scalable compliance processes. • Support due diligence on third-party AI vendors, LLM integrations, and model licensing terms. • Partner with Marketing, Product, Growth, and Engineering to embed legal review into feature development workflows from early design through to launch. • Advise on licensing and content partnership agreements where IP or AI rights are at issue. • Contribute to legal team strategy and resource planning, including identifying when to engage outside counsel versus manage in-house.

Job Requirements

  • Qualified lawyer with 5+ years of post-qualification experience in IP and/or technology law, including meaningful exposure to AI governance or digital product work.
  • Deep working knowledge of EU and US IP frameworks (trademark, copyright, trade secrets); patent prosecution experience is a plus but not required.
  • Demonstrable experience advising on AI-related legal issues - EU AI Act risk classification, algorithmic transparency, automated decision-making, or comparable.
  • Track record of managing IP disputes and litigation risk, including C&D response strategy and enforcement decisions.
  • Experience working in or advising a digital consumer product company; app-based business, ad tech, or health/wellness background is a strong advantage.
  • Comfortable operating with limited resourcing and external counsel budget: pragmatic, solution-oriented, and adept at distinguishing material risk from noise.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills; able to translate complex legal analysis into actionable, proportionate guidance for product and engineering stakeholders.
  • Fluent English required; additional European language is advantageous.

Benefits

  • Grow Together: Join a culture that champions both personal and professional growth.
  • Lead by Example: Every team member is empowered to inspire and make an impact.
  • Results-Driven: It’s not just about the effort, but the difference we make every day.
  • We Are Well-Makers: Be part of a movement that’s creating a healthier, happier world. Together, we make well-being a reality!
