Role Description In this role, you will assess risk on new and existing employer groups and develop appropriate pricing strategies. You’ll be accountable for achieving profitability, persistency, and growth goals by analyzing claims data, medical information, and plan design while collaborating closely with Sales, Brokers, and internal partners. This role is well-suited for an experienced stop-loss underwriter who enjoys working on complex cases, influencing outcomes, and serving as a trusted subject-matter expert. What You’ll Do - Evaluate risk within assigned authority levels by analyzing claims experience, shock losses, aggregate performance, and medical information. - Determine appropriate pricing using multiple tools and methodologies, including the development and application of aggregate factors. - Underwrite complex new business and renewal cases, exercising sound judgment within (and occasionally outside) established guidelines. - Communicate and negotiate case pricing with Sales, Brokers, and producers to support balanced decisions aligned with profitability and growth goals. - Manage an assigned block of business and remain accountable for key performance metrics, including rate adequacy, close ratios, renewal persistency, and service standards. - Serve as a subject matter expert, providing guidance on complex or high visibility cases and supporting peers through mentoring and training. - Partner with underwriting leadership on exceptions, customer concerns, and special projects; provide back up support for underwriting leadership as needed. - Contribute to underwriting strategy by providing competitive insights and participating in cross training initiatives, RFP responses, and process improvement efforts. - Represent Underwriting internally and externally, including travel with Field Representatives and participation in industry or company events when appropriate. Qualifications - High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred. - 8+ years of stop loss underwriting experience with strong risk-based pricing expertise. - Deep understanding of stop loss products, pricing methodologies, and employee benefit plans. - Professional designations such as HIA, MHP, or CEBS strongly preferred. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply sound judgment. - High attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. - Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills. - Comfortable partnering with Sales and service teams; service and results oriented mindset. - Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with David Young/ESL systems is a plus. - Ability to work effectively in a high production environment with shifting priorities. Job Responsibilities: - Review investor loan deficiencies and apply processing, underwriting, and closing experience to resolve issues independently, in attempts to cure these without involving the Underwriter, branch, or borrower(s). - Conduct daily review of deficiency loan pipelines within investor sites to identify suspended loans requiring remediation. - Analyze and validate all suspense conditions and provide resolution by the cure by date. - Review and obtain clarity from the investor when needed to determine documentation needed to cure defect(s). - Review the closed loan file to determine if suspense item(s) are already in the loan file. - Perform Due Diligence review of assigned TRID conditions to determine whether the mortgage loan disclosures are accurate and comply with regulation timelines. - Complete data input for issuance of Post Consummation Closing Disclosure – verifying all final fees are accurate and reconcile to the Final Settlement Statement. - Review and clear income calculations and asset investor deficiencies. - Work with internal and external departments and borrowers to obtain needed documentation to cure deficient loans timely. - Prepare formal written responses to agencies and investors in which an audit has been performed and deficiencies discovered. - Accurately track and record all loan file events and communications. - Monitor daily condition reports from the investor for updates on deficient loans or new conditions as received. - Monitor aged loans in the active pipeline until purchased by the investor. - Stay current with agency and investor guidelines and overlays to ensure underwriting compliance. - Meet daily production goals set by management and adhere to internal SLA timelines. - Maintain customer confidence by providing ongoing quality service and keeping all files and information confidential. - Perform additional duties as required.
