A Brief Overview The Data Science and Biostatistics Unit (DSBU) within the Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (DBHi) collaborates with researchers across CHOP’s Research Institute to provide data management, analysis, and consultation on methods development, study design, and data analysis. This interdisciplinary team consists of biostatisticians, epidemiologists, data scientists, data analysts, and other methodologists. Staff have expertise in managing and using diverse multimodal healthcare data from a variety of sources and registries associated with electronic health records, clinical trials, administrative and claims datasets, and survey data. DSBU staff have experience across a wide range of machine learning and statistical methodologies, including supervised and unsupervised learning, NLP, computer vision, propensity score matching, multivariate modeling, latent variable mixture models, and geographic information systems. To support DSBU’s rapid growth in meeting the analytical needs of CHOP’s research teams, we are recruiting a Data Scientist Manager. This individual will lead a team of data scientists to ensure the delivery of consistently high‑quality work within reasonable timeframes and will collaborate with principal investigators across the Research Institute to achieve meaningful results and academic output. The ideal candidate can serve as both a mentor and an individual contributor, particularly in computer vision and/or natural language processing projects involving image, video, and unstructured text healthcare data. The Data Scientist Manager will also be responsible for advancing DSBU priorities, managing members of the data science team, and overseeing budgets. This role works collaboratively with other DSBU managers and reports to the Director of the DSBU. What you will do - Builds and manages a team of staff scientists in the development and execution of a high-impact data science research program. - Recruits, hires, and manages staff, including performance management, career development. - Collaborates with clinical and biomedical researchers to identify data science research questions in clinical and translational research. - Leads data science research experiment planning and execution; where appropriate serves as project Principal or Co-investigator. - Identifies relevant clinical and translational data science funding opportunities; leads collaborative proposal planning and writing. - Disseminates research findings through peer reviewed journal articles and professional conference presentations. - Communicates research methods, implementation, and results to varied audience of clinicians, scientists, analysts, and programmers. - Guides and mentors junior staff and biomedical researcher collaborators in execution of research projects. - Serves as the subject matter expert in the implementation of computational algorithms and experiments for test and evaluation as well as advanced data interpretation to assess algorithm performance. - Sets standards and holds staff accountable for the formulation of analysis plans that meet stringent criteria for reproducibility and measures of significance. - Serves as the subject matter expert and lead architect in the development of high-quality code implementing models and algorithms as application programming interfaces or other service-oriented software implementations. - Plays a lead role in educating a varied audience of clinicians, scientists, analysts, and programmers on data science research methods, implementation, and results. - Mentors junior staff, student workers, co-ops, and research trainees (fellows, post-docs). - Manages large, complex projects and takes responsibility for major components of larger research initiatives; assigns work to junior staff, identifying, tracking, and reporting on tasks and deliverables against project timelines. Friends of the River Wye (FORW) are seeking an exceptional Citizen Science Volunteer Coordinator and Science Communicator to help coordinate our network of citizen scientists and drive public awareness of the plight of the Rivers Wye and Lugg. This role will work at the intersection of citizen science, volunteer coordination, science communication, community mobilisation and partnership building - helping ensure local voices, and evidence guide the river back to health. A significant focus of this role will be on turning complex science and data into compelling narratives of the degradation and restoration of our beloved river. Skills and experience ● Highly organised, self-motivated, and capable of managing multiple strands of work. ● Confident working with diverse groups, including volunteers, farmers, community members, NGOs, and public bodies. ● Strong communicator across written, verbal, and digital channels. ● Proven experience in social media management, campaigning, or communications. ● Ability to interpret scientific or technical information and communicate it clearly to the public. ● Working knowledge of GIS or mapping tools to support spatial understanding of citizen science data and river pressures. ● Experience presenting data visually (e.g. dashboards, maps, charts) in ways that are accurate, accessible and engaging for a public audience. ● Strong analytical skills; experience working with large datasets. ● Science qualifications or background a strong positive. ● Experience producing videos, digital content, or graphic explainers. ● Understanding of environmental issues, water quality, and agriculture (highly desirable). ● Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional evenings/weekends for events or reactive communications. ● Current drivers license and consistent access to a car (for transport around the large Wye catchment area). ● As a contracting role, the successful candidate will be expected to provide their own equipment (recent model laptop, mobile phone). ● Welsh language a strong positive. This position will jointly report to the Chair of the FORW Trustees and the Programme Manager. Where appropriate, they will ensure Welsh translation is provided, and appropriate recognition of grants and sponsorship that have supported our work. A project associated with this role is funded by the Nature Networks Programme. It is being delivered by the Heritage Fund, on behalf of the Welsh Government.
