Job Description

Technical Lead, Merchant Experience

Paramount Commerce

Based in Canada, Paramount Commerce is a fintech company focused on making payments simpler and more secure. We’ve been helping reshape online payments since the early 2000s, enabling people to pay directly from their bank accounts, without relying on credit cards or e-wallets. Security, risk management, and reliability are at the core of what we do. We build payment solutions that are seamless, backed by strong safeguards and meaningful data. As we continue to grow across Canada and prepare for global expansion, we’re looking for curious, thoughtful people who enjoy solving complex problems and pushing ideas forward. If you’re excited about building the future of payments - and want to be part of a team that’s shaping what’s next - we’d love to hear from you. The Opportunity You'll lead a high-performing team responsible for the entire merchant platform. Your mission is to build the robust, scalable, and intuitive systems that define our merchant experience. This is a critical, hands-on leadership role where you will drive the technical strategy for how we onboard, manage, and retain our merchants. This isn't just about managing a team; it's about architecting the future of our merchant-facing technology and fostering a culture of technical excellence. You will be at the centre of our most critical growth initiatives, enabling seamless engagement and loyalty through superior engineering. What You'll Do - Technical Delivery: Own day-to-day technical execution for your squad. Lead solution design, break down complex problems, and ensure the team consistently ships high-quality, scalable software across the merchant platform. - Hands-On Engineering: Stay active in the codebase. You'll write code, lead by example in reviews, and be the go-to resource when teammates hit a tough technical problem. - Technical Direction & Architecture: Drive pragmatic architecture decisions for your squad's work. You'll set the technical direction, evaluate trade-offs, and ensure the team builds things that last — without over-engineering. - Mentorship & Team Elevation: Actively grow the engineers around you. Through pairing, code reviews, and direct feedback, you'll build a team that holds a high technical bar and keeps raising it. - Cross-Functional Partnership: Work closely with other Engineering Leaders and Product Managers to translate merchant needs into a well-scoped, actionable technical plan the team can execute against. Who You Are - A Hands-On Technical Leader: You have 5+ years of software development experience (preferably in Java or Go) and at least 1 year in a tech lead or senior technical capacity. You still love writing code — and you're good at it. - A Tech-Forward Builder: You're comfortable across our core stack — Java and Go on the backend, React on the frontend, PostgreSQL for data, and AWS or GCP in the cloud. You make pragmatic decisions and know how to build for scale and reliability. - A Systems Thinker: You have a solid grasp of distributed systems, performance, and what reliability actually means in production. You design with the long term in mind, without over-engineering for problems you don't have yet. - A Multiplier: You make the people around you better. You give clear, candid, and kind feedback. You unblock teammates without creating dependency, and you build a culture where everyone holds a high bar. - An Autonomous Driver: You don't wait to be told what to do. You identify the next problem, gather the right context, and move — keeping the team focused and productive in the proc Why Paramount Commerce? - Canadian Company with over 22 years of history  🇨🇦 - Competitive salary - Generous Vacation + Summer Fridays - Health & Dental Benefits - Wellness Spending Account - Retirement savings matching plan - Remote first environment  - Quality Hardware provided to do your work  - Parental leave top up program - Birthday Day Off - Quarterly Socials  - Volunteer Days to give back to our community  The base salary range for this full-time position is $170,000 - $210,000 CAD. Final compensation will be dependent on experience, skillset, and role related qualifications, and will include benefits and bonus as per company policy. Please note that base salary ranges may differ based on location and local currency.  We use technology assisted tools, including artificial intelligence, to support parts of our recruitment process (such as resume screening, note taking, and interview scheduling).
