Job Summary We are seeking a detail oriented and highly organized Technical Writer to support the Application Sustainment and Production Support Operations team within the Rural Development mission area at the Department of Agriculture (USDA). The ideal candidate will have experience creating clear, accurate, and user-friendly documentation for technical and operational audiences. This role plays a key part in ensuring that system knowledge, processes, and procedures are well documented and easily accessible. Location This is a full-time telecommuting role. The applicant must reside in the United States and be eligible to obtain a Public Trust clearance. Responsibilities and Duties - Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system manuals, support guides, SOPs, runbooks, troubleshooting instructions, and knowledge‑base articles. - Partner with application sustainment and production support teams to document workflows, configurations, deployment processes, and operational procedures. - Translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and accurate materials suitable for both technical and non‑technical audiences. - Support documentation needs related to incidents, change management, production releases, and system enhancements. - Ensure documentation remains up to date following upgrades, configuration changes, or process improvements. - Organize and maintain documentation repositories, ensuring version control, accessibility, and alignment with organizational standards. - Assist in creating training materials, presentations, and onboarding documentation for new tools, processes, or applications. - Review existing materials and recommend improvements to clarity, structure, completeness, and consistency. - Collaborate across teams to gather information through interviews, meetings, and technical research. - Support audit and compliance activities by ensuring documentation meets required standards. Basic Qualifications and Skills Required - Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, Communications, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience. - 2–4 years of experience as a Technical Writer, preferably within IT operations, production support, or application sustainment environments. - Strong ability to understand and document technical information, systems, and processes. - Proficiency in writing, editing, and formatting technical documents. - Experience using documentation and collaboration tools (e.g., Confluence, SharePoint, Word, Visio). - Strong organization skills with attention to detail and version control. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work closely with technical subject‑matter experts. - Ability to manage multiple documentation projects and meet deadlines. Preferred Qualifications and Skills (not mandatory) - Experience with ITIL or IT Service Management environments. - Familiarity with incident, problem, or change management processes. - Basic understanding of system architectures, APIs, integrations, or cloud environments. - Experience documenting production support workflows or runbook instructions. - Ability to create diagrams, flowcharts, or visual representations of processes.
