Job Description

IT Cloud Architect - HPC

Mayo Clinic

At Mayo Clinic, cloud and advanced computing platforms are more than infrastructure; they are catalysts for discovery, innovation, and transformation in research and patient care. We are seeking an IT Cloud Architect to join the Office of the CTO to provide architectural leadership and contribute to the strategic evolution of hybrid cloud and on-premises data infrastructure supporting Generative AI (GenAI), High-Performance Computing (HPC), research computing, and data-intensive clinical initiatives. In this highly visible role, you will define and guide modern infrastructure architectures that enable scalable GPU-accelerated environments, advanced model training and inference, and high-throughput research workloads across a global healthcare enterprise. Your work will directly support secure, resilient, and high-performing platforms that power next-generation AI capabilities and computational research. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in Linux-based large-scale compute environments, cloud architecture, GPU-accelerated HPC platforms, storage systems, and AI/ML ecosystem integration. You will collaborate with engineering teams, research leadership, cybersecurity, governance, and finance partners to develop architectural roadmaps, design patterns, and implementation guidance that ensure solutions are scalable, cost-efficient, and aligned with enterprise standards. As a technical leader, you will provide architectural guidance to engineering teams, oversee the implementation of approved designs, and ensure adherence to established best practices and standards. You will maintain deep technical expertise, continuously evaluating emerging technologies and vendor solutions to determine those that best meet Mayo Clinic’s evolving research and clinical computing needs. This is an opportunity to influence foundational compute strategy, modernize hybrid cloud capabilities, and help shape the infrastructure that enables AI-driven healthcare innovation at Mayo Clinic. Strategic Context & Operational Focus This role operates at the intersection of a significant organizational transformation and a rapidly maturing on-prem and cloud ecosystem. Beyond technical design, the successful candidate will focus on: - Navigating Ambiguity: Providing consistent architectural leadership and stability within a large-scale, evolving technical organizational structure while meeting leadership priorities. - Maturing the Hybrid Ecosystem: Refining the definition of "hybrid multi-cloud" for the enterprise, with a specific focus on modernizing and stabilizing deployment pipelines (Terraform/ADO) and improving the developer/researcher experience. - GenAI & Agentic Evolution: Moving beyond the hype to establish practical governance and architectural patterns for LLMs, Model Context Protocol (MCP), and emerging agentic workflows. - User Advocacy & Mentorship: Acting as a bridge to a diverse, evolving user base and providing strategic support to highly-utilized engineering teams to ensure sustainable growth. This is a full time remote position within the United States. Mayo Clinic will not sponsor or transfer visas for this position including F1 OPT STEM. Why Mayo Clinic Mayo Clinic is top-ranked in more specialties than any other care provider according to U.S. News & World Report. As we work together to put the needs of the patient first, we are also dedicated to our employees, investing in competitive compensation and comprehensive benefit plans – to take care of you and your family, now and in the future. And with continuing education and advancement opportunities at every turn, you can build a long, successful career with Mayo Clinic. Benefits Highlights - Medical: Multiple plan options. - Dental: Delta Dental or reimbursement account for flexible coverage. - Vision: Affordable plan with national network. - Pre-Tax Savings: HSA and FSAs for eligible expenses. - Retirement: Competitive retirement package to secure your future.
