Job Description We are looking for a curious, motivated individual for a Summer Energy Engineering Internship. Overview: If you're in your 3rd or 4th year of undergraduate studies, or are enrolled in a postgraduate program in engineering, have a history of academic excellence and curiosity, and are interested in energy efficiency in new construction, we want to hear from you! This position will be primarily remote with many opportunities for rich, face-to-face time (both virtual and in-person) with experienced engineering team members. The intern will be encouraged to participate in our corporate internship program which includes opportunities to collaborate with a national intern cohort and interact with our CLEAResult executive leadership team in Austin, Texas (in late June); all expenses for this will be covered. Additionally, a $250 travel allowance is included for Portland area travel expenses such as parking and public transit fares. Basic Requirements: - Be currently enrolled, 3rd and 4th year undergraduate, and post-graduate engineering students with a focus on mechanical, chemical, electrical, renewables, construction, or related engineering studies. - Will have finished most (if not all) of the first three years of your engineering curriculum including completion of courses in physics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and programming. - Interest in mentorship and engaging and learning with our Engineering Team at CLEAResult, a consulting firm that designs and implements energy efficiency programs nationwide. - Availability for a summer internship – June to August/September. - Available for 15-20 hours per week over 8-11 weeks, not to exceed 160 hours total. The successful candidate will be paid $20.00 - 24.00 per hour, depending on experience and completed coursework. - Ability to commit to the internship duration and work the intended part-time hours with some travel time scheduled for in-person meetings, events, and networking opportunities. - Enjoy learning about and working with spreadsheets and other software. - Exhibited high academic rigor in your studies. - Curiosity about energy efficiency programs for new construction projects. For this exciting opportunity, you will gain learning and exposure to topics such as… - Working with a highly effective, interdisciplinary team reviewing new construction (NC) projects’ energy efficiency incentive applications - Using a variety of engineering calculation methodologies to determine energy savings for NC projects - Reading and understanding building plans and specifications - Applying the leading-edge Oregon Energy Efficiency Specialty Code (based on ASHRAE 90.1) to energy savings calculations - Using and modifying spreadsheet tools and calculators (MS Excel) - Understanding typical energy savings opportunities for lighting, HVAC, building shell, domestic hot water, and other energy-using systems - Utility energy efficiency program design, functions, and structures - Attending Early Design Meetings to engage with project owners, designers, and architects in the building design process - Authenticating energy efficiency measures on completed projects via remote and/or in-person verification activities - Understanding the critical role of members of our Outreach, Operations, and Marketing teams, as well as other colleagues and program partners - Building confidence in participating in engineering meetings and discussion. - Learning numerous soft skills in the energy engineering career field. In this immersive internship opportunity, the following competencies are beneficial: - Coursework and/or knowledge in at least some of the following areas: building science, energy efficiency, engineering economics, electricity/electric devices (controls, electric motors), renewable energy systems, lighting and HVAC systems, or related topics. - Interest in engineering practices as they serve utility efficiency program design, functions, and incentives. Background The EWS-F project aims to advance end-to-end multi-hazard early warning systems and capacities to enable countries to take early action and reduce the impact of hydrological hazards, in particular floods. To achieve this, the project will address gaps in observing networks, modeling and forecasting, impact-based forecasting and services delivery, while enhancing stakeholders' coordination and institutional capacity at the national level.   To ensure effective implementation and alignment with national priorities, the EWS-F project seeks to engage a National Coordination Support Consultant for Pacific to provide hands-on support to the National Meteorological and Hydrological Service (NMHS) in the Pacific region.   Duties and Responsibilities Key responsibilities will include: 1. National stakeholder engagement & coordination for Concept of Operations (CONOPS) and Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) • Facilitate regular communication between the project countries NMHSs, Disaster Risk Management (DRM) agencies, sectoral ministries (e.g., infrastructure, water resources, energy), and community stakeholders for the preparation of the CONOPS for flood forecasting and early warning according to the respective relevant national legislations. • Guide national institutions in the development of SOPs for flood forecasting and warning, and related responses. 2. Institutional workshops • Organize and coordinate national workshops, including technical consultations on user needs and review and documentation of flood warning experiences. Required Skills and Experience Education: Advanced degree in hydrology, meteorology, environmental sciences, disaster risk management, or related fields.  Experience: - Minimum 10 years of experience working with NMHSs, DRM agencies or related government institutions.   - Minimum 5 years of proven experience in project coordination, stakeholder engagement and organization of interinstitutional workshops.  - Familiarity with hydrometeorological observation systems, flood forecasting tools and impact-based forecasting approaches.   - Experience with donor-funded projects and results-based reporting is desirable.   - Strong organizational, facilitation and communication skills; ability to work independently; proficiency in report writing.   - Knowledge of the Pacific region’s meteorological context is desirable.   - Experience in collaborative work across countries in the Pacific region.   Languages: Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written) is required.
