Engineering Manager - Simple Trade
Coinbase
Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of? At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system. To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems. Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be. While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported. We are looking for an experienced engineering manager to lead the Coinbase Simple Trade team within the Consumer Product Group. Coinbase is expanding from crypto into equities and this is the team building it from scratch. We're creating an entirely new business line that brings stock trading to Coinbase's 100M+ verified users, making us the everything exchange. This isn't bolting equities onto an existing platform. It's a zero-to-one build: new trading systems, new settlement infrastructure, new regulatory integrations, all on top of Coinbase's scale. Greenfield at scale. You're not maintaining legacy systems. You're designing and building core trading infrastructure from the ground up but with the distribution, brand, and infrastructure of a public company already in place. You own the technical direction. As EM, you'll lead an 16+ person team (IC3–IC6) and own the execution roadmap for bringing equities to market. This means architecture decisions, build-vs-integrate tradeoffs, and shipping a product that handles real money at low latency. New market for Coinbase, not new to the world. Equities trading is well-understood but building it inside a crypto-native platform creates genuinely novel systems problems, unified accounts, cross-asset trading, shared settlement infrastructure. Career-defining scope. Engineering Managers who launch new business lines at public companies don't come along often. If equities succeeds, you built it. That's a very different story than optimizing an existing product by 3%. Ownership & impact - Own the technical roadmap for Simple Trading's engineering team, driving execution on cross-asset trading systems, unified account infrastructure, and settlement architecture that will power Coinbase's expansion into equities. - Lead and grow a high-performing team of 16+ engineers (IC3–IC6), coaching them to deliver impact while supporting their career development and creating a culture of technical excellence. - Partner with Product, Design, and senior leadership to translate product vision into technical execution, ensuring alignment between business goals and engineering priorities. - Drive delivery of distributed systems at scale, collaborating across Product and Engineering to build and operate multi-tenanted platforms that support millions of users trading across asset classes. - Shape engineering processes and practices that enable fast, high-quality execution in a rapidly evolving product area, including technical design reviews, code quality standards, and operational excellence. - Build the team by partnering closely with Talent to identify, attract, and hire exceptional engineering talent who will help scale this new business line. Minimum qualifications - 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with deep expertise in building and scaling distributed systems. - 2+ years of engineering management experience, including coaching engineers, managing performance, and building high-performing teams. - Proven experience building trading platforms, brokerage systems, or financial products at scale — ideally in equities, crypto, or multi-asset environments. - Strong understanding of distributed systems architecture, platform design, and the trade-offs involved in building reliable, scalable infrastructure. - Experience with long-term technical planning and translating business strategy into engineering roadmaps. - Hands-on when needed — comfortable writing and reviewing code, contributing to technical designs, and diving deep across the stack. - Thrives in fast-paced, ambiguous environments where you're building something new and defining the path forward. - Demonstrates the ability to responsibly use generative AI tools and copilots (e.g., LibreChat, Gemini, Glean) in daily workflows, continuously learn as tools evolve, and apply human-in-the-loop practices to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in efficiency, cost, and quality. Nice to haves - Experience launching new business lines or products from 0→1 at a public company or high-growth startup. - Familiarity with equities market structure, settlement systems (T+1/T+2), or brokerage infrastructure. - Prior experience scaling engineering teams beyond 20+ people.
