Director, Mechanical Engineering
General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems
Role Description Directs and coordinates fabrication, installation, operation, application, maintenance and repair of mechanical or electromechanical machines, equipment, tools, engines and systems. Ensures that quality levels and industry standards are maintained or improved in the manufacturing process. Oversees installation, operation, maintenance and repair of equipment such as centralized heat, gas, water and steam systems. Evaluates mechanical products to determine their cost effectiveness and efficiency. May evaluate field installations and recommend design modifications to eliminate malfunctions. Experience in Solid Rocket Motors is preferred. Qualifications - Associate's Degree and 8-10 years' experience OR Equivalent Combination of Relevant Education &/or Experience - Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) Requirements - Must have at least one manager level direct report - Provides leadership to managers and may also have professional staff - Is accountable for the performance and results of multiple related teams - Develops departmental plans, including business, production and/or organizational priorities - Decisions are guided by resource availability and organizational objectives - Consistent exercise of discretion & judgment Essential Functions - Oversees a team of mechanical engineers that design, analyze, and maintain mechanical components and systems to meet specified requirements and standards. - Utilizes CAD software and other design and modeling tools to plan, develop, and improve mechanical parts or components and communicate conceptual designs and specifications to stakeholders. - Oversees prototype testing to evaluate the performance, reliability, and safety of mechanical systems and reviews data and analysis to develop improvements. - Implements departmental policies and procedures to delegate workflow and ensure projects are completed on time and within required specifications and quality standards. - Leads the research and development of innovative or new technologies to improve existing products or processes. - Ensures projects follow organizational best practices for design, prototyping, and testing. - Leads and directs the work of other employees and has responsibility for personnel actions including hiring, performance management, and termination with concurrence from HR & General Managers.
