Role Description GAI Consultants, Inc. (GAI) is seeking a Geotechnical EIT 2 to work out of our Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh, Cranberry, or Canonsburg/Southpointe), West Virginia (Bridgeport or Charleston), or Virginia (Richmond or Warrenton) offices, with an option to work remotely while based out of one of those office locations. Under the direction of a Geotechnical Engineering Manager, this individual will provide geotechnical engineering and project site support for projects in the Energy, Transportation and Community Development business units. The position will require travel and fieldwork generally located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia. - Perform geotechnical engineering assignments involving investigations for a variety of facilities including, but not limited to: - Foundations for transmission lines, buildings, roadways, bridges, retaining walls, dams, and other structures - Designs for embankments and cut slopes for roadways and other developments - Designs for natural gas pipelines and compressor stations - Design of waste landfills and impoundments - Development of geotechnical monitoring and laboratory testing programs - Prepare geotechnical engineering designs involving: - Rock/soil slope stability - Cut slope and fill embankment design - Landslide stabilization and remediation (reinforcement with rock anchors/soil nails, GRS slopes) - Geotechnical field instrumentation - Soil reinforcement and ground improvement techniques (CMCs, compaction grouting, stone columns) - Sheet pile/retaining walls (gravity walls, soldier pile, and lagging walls, MSE walls, T-walls) - Shallow and deep foundations (spread footings, driven piles, micropiles, drilled shafts) - Geotechnical Investigation and Construction Support Services including, but not limited to: - Test boring monitoring and logging - Site reconnaissance - Foundation and retaining structure construction monitoring and inspection - Prepare proposals, budgets, schedules, calculations, specifications, and reports. - Travel can be expected in the form of fieldwork, which can be daily local travel or weekly out-of-town travel, generally located in the Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia areas (up to 50%). Qualifications - Minimum Years of Experience: 2+ - Education: B.S. or M.S. Engineering - Certification/Licensure: Passed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and obtained engineer-in-training (EIT) or engineering-intern (EI) certification. Requirements - Ability to work in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and rugged terrain. - Exposure to active construction sites. - Capable of walking, hiking, or standing for extended periods during field and site visits. - Must be able to lift and carry tools, equipment, technical samples, documents, and other materials weighing up to 40–50 pounds. - Frequent bending, crouching, and climbing may be required during fieldwork and sample collection. - Ability to safely operate and wear personal protective equipment (PPE), such as helmets, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and boots as required by site safety protocols. - Visual acuity and manual dexterity to handle technical tools, read maps and instruments, observe site conditions, and document findings accurately. - Comfortable working in remote or isolated locations, sometimes for extended durations. - Comfortable working in confined spaces and/or at heights, as required by specific project sites. - May require driving long distances to field sites and operating vehicles on unpaved or uneven roads. You will apply design, inspection, and rehabilitation experience to develop independent expert opinions and deliver testimony in high profile disputes. This position is well suited for an experienced engineer who wants to focus on forensic analysis, expert reporting, and client-facing consulting work. Responsibilities: Forensic & Litigation Consulting - Lead forensic investigations involving bridge and highway assets, including superstructure/substructure components, bearings/joints, decks, approach slabs, retaining walls, roadway geometry, drainage interfaces, and related civil works. - Conduct site inspections and evidence collection following failures, load events, deterioration concerns, construction deficiencies, inspection disputes, or incident-related claims. - Determine cause, origin, extent, and contributing factors, including evaluation of design intent, construction practices, inspection/maintenance history, load rating practices, and lifecycle performance. - Prepare independent, litigation-ready expert reports (and supporting exhibits) for arbitration, mediation, and court proceedings, addressing causation, standard of care, and responsibility. - Provide expert witness testimony in depositions, arbitration, and/or court, including testimony under cross-examination. - Collaborate with attorneys, insurers, owners, contractors, and other technical experts to develop coordinated expert opinions and respond to opposing expert positions. - Advise clients on remediation/repair options, risk mitigation, and dispute resolution strategy, including evaluation of constructability and safety considerations. Technical Bridge / Highway Engineering Expertise - Review and analyze drawings, specifications, calculations, inspection reports, load ratings, as-builts, maintenance records, and construction documentation. - Evaluate deterioration mechanisms and performance drivers (e.g., corrosion, fatigue, cracking, scour/hydraulic impacts, joint/bearing performance, concrete distress) and link findings to standard-of-care expectations. - Assess compliance with applicable codes and standards and inspection guidance (e.g., AASHTO, FHWA/NBIS as applicable, state DOT criteria). - Perform or direct technical analyses such as load rating review, condition/deterioration assessment, fracture/fatigue evaluation (as applicable), and construction quality review. - Develop technically sound repair, rehabilitation, and mitigation recommendations, including prioritization of corrective actions and long-term performance considerations.
