Business and Human Rights Centre Corporate Legal Accountability Programme – Summer Internship

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre

• Conduct online legal research on human rights and environmental abuses • Draft and update lawsuit profiles summarising legal information • Support the dissemination of CLA Quarterly Update newsletter • Participate in virtual meetings with staff and researchers • Assist in corporate legal accountability advocacy work

Job Requirements

  • JD students currently enrolled at Columbia University Law School
  • Secure funding from the Columbia Human Rights Internship Program
  • Demonstrated academic or professional experience carrying out international and/or multi-jurisdictional legal research, analysing and summarising information
  • Interest in and commitment to promoting human rights, especially business and human rights
  • Excellent English language skills (reading/writing/speaking)
  • Fluency in another language such as French, Spanish, Arabic or Russian is a plus
  • Ability to work independently in a multicultural team and use own initiative

Qualifications - Must be a member of the Indiana State Bar with at least three years of experience in insurance defense litigation. - Must be able to litigate and defend clients in both state and federal court. - Must be able to litigate and defend both tort/negligence actions and coverage disputes throughout the entire assigned state. - Candidate must have both personal lines and commercial lines experience and knowledge of claim values, particularly bodily injury claims. - Good knowledge of the laws of tort/negligence, civil procedure, and insurance contracts and their interpretation. - Should demonstrate initiative to improve his/her operation and adapt to the demands of a trial/litigation office, the civil trial courts and travel as required by the job. - Good analytical, organizational, legal research, and written and verbal communication skills are required. - Valid driver’s license required, as extensive auto travel may be necessary. - Good knowledge of Windows Suite products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) preferred. - Position is 100% remote with occasional in-person meetings and training.
