• Develop and execute litigation and resolution strategies for complex, high-exposure insurance matters and categories of claims. • Lead coverage analysis and defense strategy for long-tail liabilities, including asbestos (primary focus), pollution, and sex-trafficking/molestation claims. • Provide legal counsel on novel theories of liability, thin-fact claims, and matters with outsized exposure risk. • Define and implement resolution plans informed by legal, financial, and actuarial analysis. • Oversee and manage outside counsel, including litigation strategy, budgets, and performance. • Coordinate discovery, motion practice, trial strategy, appeals, and settlement efforts. • Prepare high-quality reports analyzing facts, policy language, legal exposure, risk, and recommended strategy. • Partner with internal stakeholders across claims, reinsurance, finance, and executive leadership. • Ensure consistency in company positions across similar claim types and emerging trends. • Track legal developments and advise leadership on impacts to existing and future exposures. • Represent the organization externally, including coordination with co-carriers and other partners.
Job Requirements
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
- Licensed to practice law in any U.S. state or the District of Columbia
- 5+ years of insurance coverage and/or insurance defense litigation experience; ~10 years strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience with long-tail liabilities, with asbestos coverage analysis as the top priority
- Experience with pollution and abuse/molestation or sex-trafficking-related claims strongly preferred
- Proven ability to manage complex, high-exposure litigation portfolios
- Strong legal writing, strategic judgment, and stakeholder communication skills
- Experience directing outside counsel and managing litigation budgets
- Financial or actuarial exposure analysis experience is a plus
- CPCU coursework or financial training preferred.
