Role Description Sphinx is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to join our team, building the next generation of mission planning and command and control software for space communications programs. This team is charged with creating modern, resilient services and capabilities to service the US Government for the next decade and beyond. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will play a key role in building a cutting-edge communications platform for US government satellites. You'll work as both an individual contributor and a lead for more junior engineers. What you will be focusing on: - Building multi-tenant services on public cloud platforms like AWS - Building, architecting, and consuming APIs and backend services as part of the platform ecosystem with an emphasis on automation, testing, and security - Advocating for improvements to product quality, security, and performance that have a particular impact on your team and others - Supporting junior engineering talent with mentorship or technical guidance - Interacting with customers and partners to help them integrate with our services - Scaling the services and solving interesting Space Communication challenges Qualifications - 5+ years of progressively responsible software engineering experience - Extensive experience with Python, FastAPI, Postgres, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform - Demonstrable in-depth knowledge of at least one commercial cloud platform and its associated services - Led the architecture, development, and building of backend services and APIs to ensure performance, security, and reliability - An ability to successfully own technical problems end-to-end - Excellent communication skills, working with end-users to design and build solutions to their needs - A habit of self-directed learning of new technologies, and the ability to learn quickly and adapt to a fast-paced environment Requirements - Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance - Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158 Benefits - Competitive salary - Meaningful equity ownership - Profit sharing - Employer 401(k) contribution - 100% employer covered medical, dental, and vision insurance for you and your dependents
Control Account Manager – CAM

• Managing assigned control accounts and supporting program execution through planning, budgeting, forecasting, and performance analysis. • Developing and maintaining Earned Value Management (EVM) processes, metrics, and reporting across assigned programs. • Tracking and analyzing program performance metrics, including ETC, EAC, CPI, SPI, variance analysis, and corrective action plans. • Maintaining parallel program tracking systems and databases, performing aggregate analysis across multiple data sources to ensure alignment, reporting accuracy, and actionable program insights. • Partnering with subcontractor-led Control Account Managers (CAMs) and external stakeholders to support the collection, validation, integration, and reporting of program performance data, ensuring alignment with contract requirements and EVMS processes. • Supporting the development and maintenance of Integrated Master Schedules (IMS), resource planning, and baseline management activities, including participation in Integrated Baseline Reviews (IBRs), Joint Surveillance Reviews (JSRs), and DCMA compliance audits, as applicable. • Partnering with Program Managers and Engineering teams to identify risks, opportunities, and performance trends, while supporting and maintaining a comprehensive Risk, Issue, and Opportunity (RIO) management process. • Preparing and presenting program status reports, financial analyses, and executive-level briefings. • Cross-collaborating among teams to ensure alignment between program execution and contractual requirements, including coordination across multiple networks, systems, and classification environments when required. • Assisting with proposal efforts, basis of estimate development, and program startup planning activities when needed. • Continuously improving program controls, reporting processes, and operational efficiencies across the organization.
• Configure, deploy, and maintain security tools across cloud-native environments. • Integrate security tooling into existing software development and deployment workflows. • Partner with engineering teams to implement security best practices throughout the software development lifecycle. • Manage and optimize security controls within AWS cloud environments and Kubernetes clusters. • Maintain and improve application, infrastructure, and container security posture. • Implement automated security scanning, monitoring, alerting, and remediation processes. • Support compliance, vulnerability management, and incident response efforts. • Continuously evaluate and introduce new security technologies and practices to strengthen platform security.
• Maintain and support existing AWS-based Kubernetes infrastructure and services. • Ensure platform reliability, availability, and security across cloud environments. • Develop and maintain GitLab CI/CD pipelines to support software delivery. • Build and maintain Terraform modules and infrastructure-as-code solutions. • Create and manage Helm charts for Kubernetes application deployments. • Troubleshoot infrastructure, platform, and application issues across AWS and Kubernetes environments. • Manage AWS IAM permissions and cross-account access configurations. • Partner with software and platform engineering teams to support operational needs and platform improvements. • Continuously improve system performance, automation, observability, and operational efficiency.
• Leading the development of high-quality technical documentation for complex software systems and space ground architectures • Creating and maintaining system documentation, user guides, API documentation, and operational procedures • Translating technical requirements, architecture, and workflows into clear, concise written materials • Establishing and enforcing documentation standards, processes, and style guidelines across programs • Ensuring documentation aligns with government requirements, compliance frameworks, and contract deliverables • Reviewing and editing technical content for clarity, accuracy, and consistency • Partnering with engineers and program teams to gather and validate technical information • Driving documentation best practices across engineering and program contributors
• Lead and coordinate the development of high-impact proposals (RFPs, RFIs, and white papers), ensuring clarity, compliance, and alignment with customer objectives • Partner with technical teams, engineers, subject matter experts, and leadership to identify, qualify, and pursue high-value opportunities aligned with Sphinx’s strategic priorities • Support capture and bid/no-bid decision making by analyzing solicitation requirements, customer needs, competitive landscape, and mission fit • Translate complex software, aerospace, and mission capabilities into persuasive, customer-focused proposal narratives and value propositions • Design and manage proposal response structures, schedules, workflows, and responsibilities to meet submission deadlines while maintaining high quality and accuracy • Ensure all proposal responses adhere to solicitation requirements, internal standards, and proposal best practices • Contribute to win strategies, solution positioning, and competitive analysis in support of mission-critical opportunities • Build and scale repeatable proposal and capture processes to support business growth in the defense sector
