Role Description RLF’s California team manages a suite of complex, multi-year programs that advance priorities in ocean and land conservation, resilience to climate change, freshwater, renewable energy, equitable access to public lands, and ecosystem health. Role Description About the Wildfire Program: RLF’s Wildfire program supports policy change and increased public funding for wildfire resilience in communities and ecosystems across the Western United States. Our program engages in grantmaking, coalition-building, policy development, advocacy, and capacity-building. We work at the federal level and in California, Washington, Colorado, and Montana. The Position: We are seeking a Program Manager to provide programmatic support across RLF’s wildfire resilience initiatives in Washington and California. Position Summary RLF’s California team delivers programmatic and public policy outcomes for our planet and its people across the state. The team engages in fundraising, grantmaking, coalition-building, policy development, advocacy, and capacity-building. The California watersheds program officer is a seasoned professional who, under the guidance of a senior program officer and the California director, leads RLF’s California freshwater-related programs including on-the-ground programmatic work, policy development, and advocacy and campaigns. The program officer uses grantmaking, contracting, direct engagement, and other tools to advance program outcomes. This position focuses on advancing the health and restoration of California’s watersheds and waterways. They will have a portfolio that includes management and restoration of riparian systems, improving water quality, and barrier and dam removal. This is a remote position with preference for a home base in or near Sacramento. The Program Officer will be required to travel regularly to Sacramento with occasional additional domestic travel as needed to fulfill duties. This full-time position is exempt and reports to the Senior Program Officer. This position focuses on monitoring and influencing federal legislation, engaging directly with federal agencies, administration officials, congressional offices, and partner organizations. Other duties include preparing policy recommendations and representing AWR in federal-level forums.  This position will have limited involvement with state and local government affairs, though it may include occasional meetings with partners or officials at those levels.  The ideal candidate has experience working with congressional offices and presidential administrations, with an area of focus relevant to wildfire, including natural resources, emergency management, land management, or related issue areas. Experience collaborating with coalitions or multi-stakeholder policy groups is also preferred. This position will work closely with the Managing Directors, reporting to the Managing Director for Policy, and will support advocacy, policy development, and partnerships to advance policy change.  The successful candidate will be adept at navigating work in a growing organization and remote work. This is a full-time, exempt position.
