Criminal Paralegal
Superior Court of California, County of Riverside
Role Description The Superior Court of California, County of Riverside is seeking a Criminal Paralegal to provide legal and administrative support to judicial officers handling capital cases, writs of habeas corpus, and other complex criminal matters. This is a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced legal professionals while contributing to some of the Court's most significant and challenging cases. In this role, you will: - Organize, index, and maintain records and filings for complex criminal cases. - Review and summarize motions, briefs, pleadings, transcripts, and other legal documents. - Conduct legal research and analyze procedural issues involving criminal law. - Assist judicial officers and the Managing Attorney by preparing factual and legal summaries. - Attend court hearings and prepare summaries of proceedings and rulings. - Compile and analyze case-related statistics and operational data. - Review and summarize habeas corpus petitions and supporting documentation. - Communicate complex legal issues clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. - Maintain organized case files while ensuring the highest level of accuracy and confidentiality. Requirements - Option I: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two years of full-time experience in criminal law performing legal research, analysis, file organization, or related duties. - Option II: Completion of an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited paralegal program; and four years of progressively responsible experience in criminal law performing legal research, analysis, file organization, or related duties. Role Description This position will provide legal assistance to the attorneys representing the Enterprise in all aspects of legal case preparation and file management including: - Legal research - Analyzing law sources such as statutes, judicial decisions, legal articles, and legal codes - Drafting complex documents - Contacting and interviewing clients, attorneys, and witnesses - Collecting documents and information relevant to cases The position requires you to perform expected tasks with minimal supervision. Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies or Paralegal certification required - Continuous learning, as defined by AFHI’s learning philosophy, is required - Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged - Two (2) years of paralegal experience involving civil liability or workers compensation cases preferred - Prior experience with workers’ compensation claims is preferable but not essential Requirements - Broad knowledge of the principles of the judicial and administrative process - Legal knowledge of research procedures and use of a Law Library - Strong oral/written communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills are essential - Ability to work on own initiative, multitask, and meet deadlines - Ability to handle confidential information sensitively and discreetly - Proficient in Microsoft Windows including spreadsheet applications and Microsoft Word - Strong organization, multi-tasking, and attention to detail skills required - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required - Ability to work independently as well as within a team Benefits - Actual compensation decision relies on the consideration of internal equity, candidate’s skills and professional experience, geographic location, market, and other potential factors - Reasonable estimate for this role is between $46,900 and $78,550
