Job Description

Backend Engineer

TMA Proactive Partners

Role Description This is a remote position. We are recruiting an Intermediate Backend Engineer for a technology-led financial services organisation serving customers across Africa and international markets. The platform supports high-volume customer journeys, financial transactions and partner integrations in a complex, distributed environment. This role is suited to an engineer who can own a backend domain end to end. You will write production-grade Java, but you will also think beyond the language: - How services interact - How systems fail - How APIs are consumed - How data models affect performance - How architecture should evolve over time You will work remotely from South Africa/Africa/EU in a cross-functional engineering squad. You will do the following: - Design, build and maintain backend services and APIs used by internal teams, external partners and customer-facing products. - Own the quality and reliability of the services you build, from solution design through deployment and production support. - Write unit and integration tests as a core part of development rather than treating testing as a separate QA activity (TDD). - Participate actively in architecture and system-design discussions, contributing practical and well-reasoned technical perspectives. - Review pull requests and use code review as both a quality control and a learning mechanism. - Create and maintain technical documentation, including OpenAPI specifications, service READMEs and operational runbooks. - Contribute to shared libraries, reusable components and platform standards where your work has value across squads. - Take part in backlog refinement, planning, stand-ups, reviews and retrospectives, with clear accountability for squad outcomes. - Use AI and LLM tooling appropriately for code generation, test creation, debugging, documentation and engineering productivity. Qualifications - At least 3 years of professional backend software engineering experience, including a minimum of 2 years using Java in a production environment. - Strong Java and Spring Boot capability, including dependency injection, Spring Security, Spring Data, transaction management and testing with Spring Test. - Sound REST API design knowledge, including versioning, error handling, idempotency, pagination and backward compatibility. - Experience designing and working with relational databases, including schema design, indexing, query optimisation and performance-aware data modelling. - A working understanding of distributed-systems concepts, including eventual consistency, idempotency, retries, circuit breakers and failure-mode thinking. - Practical testing experience using JUnit and Mockito, together with integration tests against a real database and an understanding of the test pyramid. - Ability to write clean, readable, maintainable code and to explain technical decisions clearly to other engineers. - Production experience with event-driven architecture using Kafka, RabbitMQ or an equivalent messaging platform. - Understanding of consumer groups, offset management and at-least-once versus exactly-once delivery semantics. - Experience in a microservices environment, including service discovery, API gateways, inter-service communication and distributed tracing. - Working familiarity with AWS and the runtime environment in which backend services are deployed. - Experience with Docker and modern CI/CD practices. - Exposure to Kotlin or another JVM language, or a willingness to learn. - Fintech, payments, lending, insurance or broader financial-services experience is required. - Understanding of reconciliation, idempotent payment flows, audit logging and other controls relevant to financial systems. Requirements - Candidates must submit a current CV together with a brief note outlining their experience with Java, Spring Boot, backend architecture and distributed systems online.

• Architect and build HubSpot solutions for US pod clients: data migrations, CRM implementations, custom UI extensions, workflows, website development, and API/systems integrations. • Write clean, maintainable code across Huble's backend stack, and own your own bug fixes and feature builds end to end. • Review API documentation to assess feasibility before committing to a scope. • Identify technical risk in a proposed solution early and propose alternatives, rather than surfacing problems after a build has started. • Provide code review and QA on US pod work, including work handed over from or to the South Africa team. • Maintain strong working knowledge of HubSpot's platform, APIs, and native capabilities, with a focus on where custom development is genuinely needed versus where native functionality already solves the problem. • Act as the client-facing technical expert during pre-sales, discovery, and scoping calls in US business hours. • Own technical validation of scope for US pod work: translate business requirements into accurate specifications, development hours, and cost estimates. • Partner directly with Solutions Architects on scoping, joining early rather than reviewing after the fact. Recurring feedback from the US pod is that requests reaching development are often missing detail. Closing that gap before it becomes a build problem is a core part of this role. • Give Sales and Account teams a straight, credible technical read during prospecting and deal-scoping conversations, including where something isn't feasible or needs to be scoped differently. • Be Huble's live technical presence for US clients: attend client calls, escalations, and discovery sessions during US hours. • Provide timely troubleshooting and technical response on live issues without needing to wait for South Africa hours to overlap. • Build direct technical credibility and trust with US clients through consistent, visible presence, not just delivered output. • Follow Huble's Back End Development standards and deployment process in full. • Join Back End team routines (stand-ups, architecture discussions, knowledge-sharing) on a regular cadence, even where full daily overlap isn't possible, to stay current with shared standards and avoid drifting into ad hoc practices. • Document scope, decisions, and handovers clearly and consistently. • Escalate to the Head of Back End Development when something is outside your judgement call, rather than resolving it alone and reporting it after the fact. • Feed learnings from US-specific client work back into Huble's broader Back End practices.

Role Description We're looking for a Senior Backend Developer to be Huble's dedicated technical resource for the US pod, reporting to the Head of Back End Development. This is an individual contributor role, not a people-management role. There is no team to manage. What the role does need is enough architectural experience and judgement to operate without a local backend peer for most of the working day. You'll split your time between hands-on development, technical scoping, and live client-facing work in US hours. You remain part of Huble's single global Back End Development team. - Software Architecture & Technical Delivery - Architect and build HubSpot solutions for US pod clients: data migrations, CRM implementations, custom UI extensions, workflows, website development, and API/systems integrations. - Write clean, maintainable code across Huble's backend stack, and own your own bug fixes and feature builds end to end. - Review API documentation to assess feasibility before committing to a scope. - Identify technical risk in a proposed solution early and propose alternatives. - Provide code review and QA on US pod work, including work handed over from or to the South Africa team. - Maintain strong working knowledge of HubSpot's platform, APIs, and native capabilities. - Scoping & Pre-Sales Support - Act as the client-facing technical expert during pre-sales, discovery, and scoping calls in US business hours. - Own technical validation of scope for US pod work. - Partner directly with Solutions Architects on scoping. - Give Sales and Account teams a straight, credible technical read during prospecting and deal-scoping conversations. - Client-Facing Technical Delivery - Be Huble's live technical presence for US clients. - Provide timely troubleshooting and technical response on live issues. - Build direct technical credibility and trust with US clients. - Standards, Quality & Team Connection - Follow Huble's Back End Development standards and deployment process in full. - Join Back End team routines regularly. - Document scope, decisions, and handovers clearly and consistently. - Escalate to the Head of Back End Development when necessary. - Feed learnings from US-specific client work back into Huble's broader Back End practices. Qualifications - 8+ years as a Backend Developer, including demonstrable experience owning architecture decisions. - Comfortable operating with autonomy, ideally with prior experience working remotely. - Proven experience scoping and costing technical work. - Comfortable pushing back on Project Managers or other stakeholders. - Experience being client-facing as a technical expert. - Strong proficiency with RESTful APIs and GraphQL. - PHP 7 / PHP 5 (5+ years): strong understanding of PHP. - Symfony 7 / 6 / 5 or similar frameworks: solid understanding of modern PHP frameworks. - HTML5 (5+ years): strong understanding of semantic, standards-based HTML. - JavaScript (4+ years): strong working knowledge. - Node.js (2-3 years): experience building scalable backend services. - React (2+ years): advantageous for supporting front-end React features. - iPaaS (2+ years): experience designing integrations using platforms like n8n.io, Boomi, or Workato. - In-depth knowledge of HubSpot's products and APIs. - Understanding of architectural patterns. - Extensive experience with development tools, build systems, version control, and CI/CD pipelines. Benefits - Fully remote position. - Final compensation packages and benefits tailored to comply with local labor laws. Interview Process - Video Interview (15 min) - 1st Interview (30 min) - Assessment - Presentation Interview (60 min) - Final Interview (30 min)
