Role Description The County of San Diego's Office of County Counsel has a current opening for CONFIDENTIAL PARALEGALS. This recruitment is for temporary positions but may be used to fill permanent positions in the future. Temporary assignments can last between 6 months and up to 12 months. Confidential Paralegals assist in discovery, motion practice and trial preparation of tort, civil rights and law enforcement litigation and associated cases. The ideal candidate will be an experienced paralegal who can: - Function effectively in a busy legal office - Work under a high degree of autonomy and independence - Demonstrate the ability to be a quick learner in performing a wide variety of paralegal duties - Work in a fast-paced environment with responsibility for an assigned case load - Participate in trials Helpful skills include: - Knowledge of federal, California state and local court rules - The ability to use office productivity software like Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc. - The ability to propose case specific discovery strategies - Efficiently prepare discovery summaries Qualifications - Completion of an American Bar Association accredited paralegal program (must submit a copy of your certification with your application); OR - Eighteen (18) months of experience performing paralegal work in a public or private law office Important Note: Legal secretarial or clerical experience is not considered paralegal work for purposes of meeting the requirements. The practice of law by a licensed attorney is also not considered paralegal experience. Requirements - Positions may involve necessary and timely transportation for field travel, requiring the ability to arrange transportation to different worksites, meetings, or field work. Based in our corporate headquarters in St. Louis, you will work closely with the Vice President, Senior Associate General Counsel for M&A, Securities & Corporate Governance and play a critical role in ensuring compliance with applicable securities laws, stock exchange requirements, and internal governance policies and procedures. ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES: SEC Filings & Public Company Requirements - Assist in the preparation and submission of SEC reports including Forms 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K, proxy statements, and Section 16 filings. - Provide support for annual stockholders meetings, including development and preparation of annual stockholders meeting planning worksheet, and manage other stock exchange listing requirements. - Maintain and update insider trading records and support adherence to the company’s securities trading policy, including assisting with the administration of trading plans, insider trading window and special blackout period notices, and pre-clearance and hardship exemption requests. Corporate Governance - Maintain and update documentation in the global corporate governance platform – including subsidiary and JV entity records, board resolutions, meeting minutes, governance charters, and director questionnaires – and assist in legal entity formation, filings, dissolution, organizational structure charts, etc. - Develop and maintain Corporate Governance & Securities Calendar for tracking regulatory and governance deadlines to ensure all filings, governance activities and other requirements are completed on time. - Support the Corporate Governance Community of Practice by managing central hub for exchanging best practices, establishing consistent processes, standardizing tools, and tracking cost savings across the company’s global platform. • Manage a high-volume litigation docket across multiple jurisdictions and subject matters • Track case developments, deadlines, budgets, outside counsel activity, and key litigation milestones • Coordinate document collection, discovery responses, document productions, and litigation hold • Support all phases of litigation, including pleadings, discovery, depositions, hearings, arbitrations, and trials • Serve as a primary point of coordination between internal stakeholders and outside counsel • Design, implement, and maintain systems for tracking litigation matters, key metrics, and case outcomes • Develop reporting dashboards and recurring management reports regarding: Case inventory, Matter status, Jurisdictional trends, Outside counsel utilization, Resolution timelines, Settlement and litigation spend, Emerging risk areas • Analyze litigation data and identify trends, opportunities, and operational improvements • Generate executive-ready reports and presentations that translate data into actionable recommendations • Leverage technology, automation, and AI tools to improve efficiency, consistency, and scalability within the litigation function • Develop and maintain litigation workflows, playbooks, templates, and standard operating procedures • Coordinate preservation, collection, review, and production of electronically stored information (ESI) • Manage document repositories, litigation databases, and matter management systems • Work closely with outside counsel and vendors on eDiscovery strategy and execution.
Role Description - Assisting attorneys in all phases of litigation and case management. - Creating case reports, summaries, and legal documents tailored to specific case documentation. - Preparing professional correspondence and basic legal motions. - Scheduling prehearing conferences, hearings, and settlement conferences. - Coordinating and scheduling independent medical examinations and appointments. - Organizing file materials and indexing voluminous medical records chronologically. - Managing the firm's docketing and calendaring systems to track critical litigation deadlines and events. - Communicating proactively with supervising attorneys regarding task statuses and case updates. Qualifications - Exceptional organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail. - Superb verbal and written communication skills, including flawless grammar and spelling. - Ability to thrive under pressure and multitask efficiently within a high-volume litigation environment. Requirements - Prior experience in workers' compensation defense is highly preferred. - Mastery of Microsoft Office (specifically Word) and Adobe Acrobat is required. - Experience with case management billing tools like Centerbase and NetDocs is beneficial but not required. - A Bachelor's degree or a Paralegal Certificate is preferred.
