Position Description: The Motus Technology team is seeking an experienced leader to mentor and scale a small team of 5-8 engineers. You will play a key role in building and developing server-side applications, drive the technical strategy, and nurture the growth of engineers. You will be part of the Driver Experience team, responsible for the end-to-end driver journey across our mobile app, backend services, and web dashboard To be successful in this role as the Manager, Software Engineering you must thrive in a creative, collaborative, and agile development environment. This is an ideal role for someone who has successfully built scalable, extensible software on a Java stack and is looking to advance their career in technical leadership. Position Duties: Lead, mentor and develop engineers while fostering a high-performing, self-organizing, and collaborative team environment. Guide team planning, execution, and delivery; ensure clear requirements and alignment with business objectives. Build an environment where engineers take ownership, make informed decisions, and continuously improve how they work. Encourage and support the team in using AI tools and automation to improve development workflows and efficiency. Oversee the team’s participation in production support, ensuring timely incident response, clear communication, and continuous reliability improvements. Maintain a high attention to detail and ensure the team executes with operational rigor across delivery, quality, and documentation. Collaborate with stakeholders to communicate priorities, progress, risks, and team needs. Participate in technical design discussions and code reviews; occasionally contribute to backend development when bandwidth allows. Establish and refine engineering standards, best practices, and development processes. Manages day-to-day team operations to ensure predictable delivery and strong engineering output. Recruit, onboard, and support the ongoing performance and professional development of the team. Help shape the evolution of Motus’ engineering environment and technical direction. Desired Skills & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and/or equivalent work experience preferred. 3+ years of experience in a management or technical leadership position 5-9+ years of experience developing server applications (Java/Spring ecosystem preferred) Experience with Spring, Spring MVC, Hibernate, and JPA Experience with Object Oriented Programming (OOP), design patterns, and domain-driven design Experience with modern web development such as React, AJAX, HTML5 / CSS3 and Javascript frameworks Experience leading and mentoring a fully remote or geographically distributed engineering team Experience working in a Scrum environment and working knowledge of Agile methodologies. Excellent English and communication skills with high attention to detail in planning, documentation, and delivery Ability to work independently and collaboratively on multiple projects simultaneously. Demonstrated experience in the establishment and streamlining of development practices to ensure the highest quality of software and operational experience Experience influencing strategic direction of team and alignment with business objectives Proven ability to collaborate effectively with team members and leadership Experience integrating AI-driven tools to enhance team productivity and quality Where required by law, Motus provides a reasonable range of compensation for specific roles. The pay range for this role is $160,000 - $170,000. Actual compensation will depend on a number of factors, including the candidate’s relevant experience, technical skills, and other qualifications.
