Associate Director – Substation

• Manages and leads all engineering activities during the proposal, design, quality control, and construction stages of substation projects that are assigned. • Provides management and leadership for subconsultants • Provides substation project oversight, including managing engineering scope according to technical contracts, developing change orders, and maintaining project schedules. • Directs and coordinates activities of several disciplines on a project of significant scope or a combination of large projects. • Maintains high levels of quality to meet internal and external client requirements in alignment with company expectations. • Maintains and grows a positive team culture that supports strong client service, collaboration, and accountability. • Provides leadership, coaching, and direction to technical engineering managers and teams supporting Key Client work. • Evaluates team capacity, technical skillsets, and resource alignment to support Key Client opportunities, project execution, and department growth. • Develops team capabilities needed to deliver consistent quality, responsiveness, and technical excellence for Key Clients. • Coaches, trains, and develops management staff through regular management meetings, 1:1 meetings, career development discussions, talent assessment, succession planning, quarterly reviews, individual promotions, team retention efforts, and engagement survey follow-up. • Oversees and approves team budgets, including revenue, profitability, indirect expenses, training expenses, reward and recognition expenses, and team event costs. • Supports hiring, development, engagement, and retention strategies aligned with department growth and client delivery needs. • Leads the development and implementation of departmental continuous improvement and strategic initiatives to drive efficiency, innovation, and long-term success. • Leads and supports strategic substation opportunities for Key Clients, including positioning, pursuit strategy, proposal development, and execution planning. • Partners with Sales, Project Management, and technical leaders to align client needs with Ulteig’s delivery capabilities, growth objectives, and territory sales plan execution. • Supports successful execution of priority Key Client work by helping remove barriers, align resources, manage expectations, and reinforce quality delivery. • Supports proposal efforts by developing, providing resources, and reviewing proposals, contracts, work orders, MSAs, and NDAs in partnership with the Proposal Development Team and Project Management group. • Builds and maintains trusted relationships with Key Client stakeholders through responsive communication, technical credibility, and consistent follow-through. • Identifies opportunities to expand services with existing Key Clients while balancing delivery capacity, profitability, and long-term client relationship health.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering required from ABET accredited school or equivalent
- 15+ years of experience in the Engineering field preferred
- PE registration is required
- Prior management experience required
- Prior technical substation experience required
- Must be analytical, self-motivated, and possess the ability to work in high-pressure situations while maintaining a positive, enthusiastic, and collaborative attitude
- Focused and passionate around internal engagement and maximizing development of others
- Strong business acumen and industry knowledge
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain trusted Key Client relationships.
- Experience supporting strategic pursuits, proposals, or client growth initiatives.
- Proven ability to align technical teams, project execution, and client expectations.
- Strong understanding of substation project delivery, client service, and operational execution.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, public and external agencies
- High level of initiative and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with clear expectations and highly responsive, internally and externally
- Excellent presentation and verbal/written communications skills
- Displays a high level of initiative and explores new opportunities while understanding the risk to the organization
- Proven experience in Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access) and additional software knowledge depending on specialty.
