Adjunct Instructor - Government/History
HIGHLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Role Description Adjunct Instructors teach current curricula for Highland Community College (College) within assigned discipline and at main, regional, or online locations. This position is employed on an as-needed, class-by-class, basis as determined by the College. There is no guarantee for continued employment beyond the assigned class/semester. Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Have an active presence in course as determined by course schedule. - Update and distribute First Day Handout (FDH) based on previously approved course syllabus and coordinate course outline with established deadlines. - Grade assignments in a timely manner, keeping students updated on their progress in the course. - Provide students with timely, constructive, encouraging, and corrective feedback on assignments. - Evaluate student learning applying course competencies. - Plan, prepare, and maintain coursework and instructional resources; integrate instructional technology and alternative delivery systems as applicable to the teaching discipline. - Be accessible to students through email, phone, and face-to-face meeting (when appropriate). - Evaluate students based on request and final grade directions submitted at the end of the session. - Report grades based on request and final grade directions submitted at the end of the session. - Manage the teaching and learning environment to serve all learners in the classroom setting. - Conduct all class sessions in a professional manner and exhibit good judgment and professional behavior. - Report any students experiencing attendance or academic challenges to the appropriate department. - Take responsibility for attending or accessing content provided during in-service or training encouraged by the College. - Participate in institutional effectiveness initiatives including assessment, evaluation, and administration of benchmark assignments. - Respect the confidentiality of student information; refrain from discussing or releasing such information except within recognized limits. - Fulfill all College policies and procedures, including mandatory training. - Attend and participate in all required instructor orientations and meetings in addition to exercising stewardship in the use of college facilities and materials. - Demonstrate professionalism with faculty, administration, staff, students, and constituents. - Maintain a professional attitude and conduct toward teaching and professional relationships. - Submit information or materials related to their assigned duties and requested by college administrators or peers in a timely manner. - Maintain proper credentials as required by the college's accrediting agencies. - Be committed to keeping current in their respective discipline. Qualifications - Master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the subject area required. - Community college teaching, curriculum development, teaching online, remote or hybrid preferred. - Experience with active learning techniques, accelerated learning programs, and Canvas Learning Management System strongly preferred. Requirements - Knowledge of subject area. - Skill and ability to convey the knowledge to students in an effective manner and as required by the Board of Trustees. - Ability to demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to effective teaching strategies including active learning and methods to enhance student success at community colleges. - Ability to implement sound instructional methods drawn from scholarship of teaching and learning to cultivate a supportive learning environment, allowing students to think critically and actively learn content. - Ability to organize and direct all instructional activities in compliance with safe and standard practices. - Ability to work with and assist students in academic planning. - Ability to work cooperatively with students, peers, colleagues, and administrators. - Ability to communicate effectively with others to facilitate consensus. - Ability to communicate effectively with students of diverse ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, including students with disabilities. - Ability to represent and promote the welfare of the College as required. - Ability to communicate effectively with all constituents of the community college environment including the public.
