Associate Director, Strategic Communications
Planned Parenthood Federation of America
Role Description Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) seek a dynamic and passionate Associate Director of Strategic Communications. This position reports to the Director of Health and Affiliate Communications in the External Affairs division of PPFA. The Communications team provides strategic communications guidance, support, and tactics to PPFA, PPAF, and Planned Parenthood affiliates. Purpose: - Support the organization’s communications efforts in support of the ‘I’m For’ and ‘I Fight For’ campaigns. - Help design and drive strategy around communicating the story of legislative and legal attacks on Planned Parenthood health centers. - Devise and execute messaging and media strategies to elevate Planned Parenthood’s role as an essential health care provider. - Create and execute communications plans and provide strategic communications advice to affiliates and external partners. - Produce and review communications materials. - Build a proactive communications strategy for expanding media outreach. Engagement: - Work closely with multiple departments and teams, including organizing, campaigns, research and policy, care and access, digital strategy, content, culture, and events, strategic partnerships, and litigation and law. - Help create and deliver communications products to drive PP impact stories. - Identify and train spokespeople. - Ensure consistency of messaging across teams. - Serve as one of the organization’s lead points of contact for members of the media. Delivery: - Provide strategic communications guidance and resources to Planned Parenthood affiliates. - Proactively communicate on affiliates’ innovative strategies to provide care. - Devise communications strategies to fight back against legislative attacks. - Help develop and execute media campaigns to shape the media narrative. - Draft and review press releases, statements, advisories, op-ed pieces, talking points, briefing notes, message guidance, fact sheets, and other materials. - Proactively pitch media at the state and national levels. - Build and manage relationships with new media outlets. - Serve as a media relations point person, handling day-to-day media relations. - Provide affiliates with expert guidance on crisis communications plans and support rapid response to breaking news. - Conduct media and message trainings for affiliate spokespeople and other staff. - Help lead brainstorming sessions and identify opportunities to strengthen campaign communications work. - Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): $100,000 - $105,000 a year. - Travel: 0-15% domestic. Lead alignment and readiness calls to ensure smooth execution. • Communication Leadership: Deliver clear, timely, and actionable enterprise-wide communications regarding launches, pricing, process changes, and other key updates. • Adoption and Performance Monitoring: Track adoption metrics, identify gaps, and proactively implement corrective actions to reinforce consistency and alignment across the field. • Continuous Improvement: Collect feedback from teams and performance data to update playbooks, training, and communications for ongoing improvement. • Ownership and Accountability: Serve as the single owner of enterprise communications, playbooks, and training standards, ensuring consistent, aligned rollouts across all business units and driving operational alignment.
