Power Distribution Engineer

• Customize switchboard, PDU, and RPP designs based on customer specifications and project requirements • Create detailed mechanical and electrical CAD drawings in SolidWorks, adhering to UL 891, UL 67, and other applicable standards • Maintain up-to-date design documentation and clearly communicate changes to relevant stakeholders • Review and verify all drawings to ensure clarity, manufacturability, and alignment with technical requirements • Troubleshoot design issues during production in collaboration with manufacturing teams • Manage multiple design projects simultaneously and deliver on deadlines • Communicate effectively across time zones to align technical deliverables and resolve any issues quickly

Job Requirements

  • Degree or certification in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in a sheet metal manufacturing environment
  • Proficiency in CAD tools, particularly SolidWorks
  • Demonstrated experience designing UL 891-compliant low-voltage switchboards
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, tolerances, and material specifications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially when coordinating with international teams
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects at once

Role Description SmartLam North America is seeking a Project Engineer to support the successful design, coordination, and delivery of innovative mass timber projects across the United States. In this role, you will partner with Engineering, Design, Project Management, Sales, Quality, and Research and Development teams to help move projects from early design support through review, fabrication, and construction. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented engineering professional who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, coordinating with multidisciplinary project teams, and contributing to efficient design for manufacturing and assembly. The Project Engineer will help ensure SmartLam’s high standards for accuracy, service, quality, and sustainability are reflected in every project. Mass Timber Project Engineer is accountable for supporting the Engineering and Design department to ensure that Mass Timber projects are completed accurately and are issued for review, fabrication, and construction in a timely manner. The primary objectives are to design for optimal manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) and ensuring that SmartLam’s high level of service is provided on every project. Starting position level will be determined based on experience and abilities. Location: REMOTE, OR COLUMBIA FALLS, MONTANA, OR DOTHAN, ALABAMA Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Engineering design and detailing on Mass Timber projects, including preliminary engineering, design assist support, and deferred submittals. - FEA modeling, analysis, and design of Mass Timber projects using Dlubal FEA Software. - Develop clear and organized engineering calculation packages. - Technical expertise with Mass Timber products, engineering concepts, and detailing. - Complete take-offs and order of fasteners, hangers, brackets, and other miscellaneous components that are part of the Mass Timber installation package. - Support Engineering staff with the development of technical documents, white papers, and calculations templates. - Support Sales staff with technical review, documentation, and client management. - Support Project Managers with the successful delivery of mass timber projects. - Support Research and Development with technical review, documentation, and client management. - Support Design staff with the development of Mass Timber submittal drawings, shop drawings, and production drawings. - Support Quality Control/Quality Assurance process on project submittals prior to delivery for submittal review, production, and construction. - Coordinate project information with project design team (architect, engineer, contractor). - Manage and track project RFI’s. Qualifications - B.S. in Engineering - Structural Emphasis Preferred. - 2+ years experience in building engineering (structural). - Experienced with mass timber (wood) design and construction. - Experience reading blueprints and project manuals. - Experience in FEA software. - Experience in AutoCAD (2D or 3D). - Proficient with Microsoft Office suite of products. - Highly organized and detailed. - Able to work well with others in a team environment. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
