Railway Electrification Planner

Optiveum

• Lead the planning and concept development of railway electrification systems, including 25 kV AC, 15 kV AC, and 750 V DC traction power configurations, in accordance with applicable national and international standards. • Develop and review technical documentation including system design reports, load flow studies, short-circuit analyses, protection coordination studies, and earthing & bonding schemes. • Plan and specify traction power substations (TPS) and autotransformer stations, including transformer sizing, switchgear configuration, SCADA/remote control interfaces, and protection relay settings. • Produce and review drawings, schematics, and layout plans for substation sites and overhead line equipment corridors. • Perform or oversee route surveys, corridor studies, and site feasibility assessments for electrification infrastructure. • Define technical specifications and tender documentation for electrification works and equipment procurement. • Manage interfaces with civil, signalling, telecommunications, and rolling stock disciplines to ensure system compatibility and integration. • Support environmental impact assessments and planning approval processes related to electrification infrastructure. • Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, and method statements during the design and construction phases. • Participate in design reviews, HAZOP/HAZID workshops, and safety assurance processes in line with the applicable Safety Management System (SMS). • Monitor industry developments, regulatory changes, and emerging standards relevant to railway electrification.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in railway electrification planning or design, with demonstrable involvement in traction power substation projects.
  • Solid understanding of traction power supply systems (AC and/or DC), overhead line systems, and power quality requirements.
  • Experience with load flow and short-circuit simulation tools (e.g., PSCAD, ETAP, Spice-based tools, or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of substation protection, SCADA systems, and earthing philosophies for traction environments.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and CIVIL 3D.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; additional languages are an asset.
  • Preferred: Eligibility for professional engineering registration (PE, CEng, or national equivalent).

Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field from an accredited university or college (OR a High School Diploma / GED with a minimum of 4 years of Repair or Installation Field Engineering experience). - Ability and willingness to travel 50% of the time, which includes international travel and must comply with all relevant company travel and tax policies.
