Role Description Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton) is seeking a part-time Medical Transcriptionist (with 2+ years of experience) who interprets and transcribes dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding patient assessment, workup, therapeutic procedures, clinical course, diagnosis, prognosis, etc., in order to document patient care and facilitate delivery of healthcare services. This role is a specialist in medical language and ensures that all medical documentation is precise, timely, and compliant with regulatory standards. - Demonstrates an understanding of the medicolegal implications and responsibilities related to the transcription of patient records to protect the patient and the business/institution. - Meets standards of professional and ethical conduct and confidentiality. Adheres to HIPAA regulations. - Returns dictated reports in printed or electronic form for physicians' review, signature, and corrections, and for inclusion in patients' medical records. - Recognizes, interprets, and evaluates inconsistencies, discrepancies, and inaccuracies in medical dictation and appropriately edits, revises, and clarifies without altering the meaning of the dictation. - Transcribes medical dictation to provide a permanent record of patient care. - Applies knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology to the transcription and proofreading of medical dictation from originators. - Reviews and edits transcribed reports for spelling, grammar, clarity, consistency, and proper medical terminology. - Operates designated word processing, dictation, and transcription equipment as directed to complete assignments effectively, skillfully, and efficiently. - Maintains equipment and work area as directed.
