Senior Upstream Process Engineer, Commercial

Thermo Fisher Scientific

• Lead upstream process design, including PFDs, P&IDs, balances, and equipment specs • Develop scalable solutions for media prep and bioreactor-based manufacturing with automation • Ensure compliance with cGMP and global regulatory standards • Lead FEL/FEED efforts, translating customer needs into defined scopes • Develop costed proposals with scope, assumptions, risks, and exclusions • Support CAPEX estimates aligned with commercial and margin goals • Serve as primary technical contact for customers and project teams • Lead design reviews, technical discussions, and executive presentations • Collaborate cross-functionally across sales, engineering, and global teams • Contribute to technical marketing (white papers, webinars, presentations) • Represent Thermo Fisher at industry events to promote bioproduction solutions • Ensure smooth handoff to execution teams with clear scope and continuity

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field required; Master’s or PhD preferred
  • 8+ years of experience in process engineering or bioprocess system design within the biopharma or life sciences industry
  • Strong expertise in upstream bioprocessing, including cell culture, media preparation, and single-use technologies
  • Experience with capital equipment projects and development of complex engineering proposals
  • Demonstrated ability to lead front-end engineering, scope definition, and technical solution development
  • Familiarity with automation platforms (e.g., DeltaV, PLC/SCADA systems) and integration within bioprocess facilities preferred
  • Strong understanding of cGMP and global regulatory frameworks (FDA, EMA, ICH)
  • Proven ability to influence and collaborate across cross-functional and global teams
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience engaging customer stakeholders and executive audiences
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, customer-driven environment

About the Role As a System Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and configuring low voltage switchgear (Sivacon S8) for our data center customers in the EMEA region. You will work in a close-knit team of experienced engineers and take ownership of the entire process—from design to factory testing and customer interaction during Factory Acceptance Tests. You will see the direct results of your work—from concept to physical panels. Our team consists of 24 colleagues, including 14 system engineers. Together, we deliver complex projects for international clients. The work is challenging and fast-paced but highly rewarding. You will be part of a supportive team where collaboration and expertise go hand in hand. Your Responsibilities - Design and configure electrical drawings, including SLDs, schematics, front views, and Bills of Materials. - Select components and prepare concepts for customized mechanical designs within switchgear assemblies. - Ensure all designs comply with customer specifications and international standards (e.g., IEC). - Configure electrical and mechanical designs using the configurator tools. - Collaborate closely with project managers, lead engineers, EPLAN engineers, manufacturing, and commissioning teams to ensure smooth project execution. - Investigate and resolve technical issues during design, manufacturing, factory testing (FAT), and on-site commissioning, including performing Factory Witness Tests with customers. - Identify opportunities for process improvement and standardization in design and manufacturing. What You Bring - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (Master's degree is welcome, but practical experience is key). - 2–3 years of experience in low voltage systems or switchgear design. - Knowledge of electrical standards, protection and control devices, metering systems, and communication systems. - Ability to interpret technical drawings and customer specifications accurately. - Strong communication skills, problem-solving ability, and decision-making attitude. - Fluent in Dutch and English. - Willingness to travel 25–30% for FAT/FWT.
