Job Description

Major Gift Officer

Convention of States

• Manage his/her own portfolio of major gift prospects and donors. • Work closely with the SVP of External Relations to develop and implement strategies for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors and prospects with capacity for a major gift of $10,000 to $1 million and above. • Build strong long-term relationships with his/her caseload, composed of generous donors to the organization who are committed to its mission. • Actively engage in regular donor/prospect communications. • Plan, organize, and direct fundraising strategies and campaigns for major donors to Convention of States. • Develop and maintain a high level of understanding of COS work and priorities. • Track and report progress using specific metrics. • Manage all donor engagement activity through the use of COSA’s donor management system. • Participate as a member of the External Relations team, and member of all staff through active involvement in team and all staff meetings, events, and training. • Travel 25-30% to meet with donors.

Job Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in development or business.
  • Sales, marketing, and financial skills are preferred.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel 25-30% of the time.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work as part of a team and independently as required.
  • Proven experience with successful fundraising, project management, sales or politics.
  • Working knowledge of computer programs and applications such as: MS Office, Google Suites, Slack/Zulip, Zoom/Meetn, Salesforce, or other DMS.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with specific deadlines while delivering high quality work.
  • Ability to learn, understand and maintain current best practices in philanthropic giving.
  • Must be highly loyal and trustworthy with a history of working in an environment where sensitive information is protected.
