Job Requirements

  • 10 - 12+ Years of Life Insurance Underwriting experience with proven proficiency in underwriting processes and philosophies
  • 5+ Years of team management experience in an Underwriting capacity
  • Ability to handle advanced decision level authorities without a co-signature ($15 Million or higher)
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build relationships both internally and externally
  • Critical thinking skills and attention to detail with the ability to quickly identify information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events
  • Ability to interpret meaning of information for others; translating or explaining what information means and how it can be used
  • Ability to develop specific goals, plan, and prioritize work
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • BGA and Trial Experience Preferred
  • Completion of FALU, CLU, FLMI or other insurance related course work

PURPOSE OF THE JOB The purpose of this job is to establish collaborative relationships with agencies and producers to understand external marketplace and underwrites within established performance standards. This role evaluates complex business for risk acceptability; matching price to exposure, loss frequency and severity for profitability, and rating plans/modifications for renewal retention. This role exists to ensure that the Company's marketing and producer management objectives are met, through the generation and maintenance of a profitable book of business in accordance with Company goals and guidelines. LOCATION: Candidates located in North Florida are preferred, as this role supports a territory covering that region. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Drives and manages a profitable and growing book of business. - Sells, services and maintains a producer force that can sell and control a profitable and growing book of business. - Monitors the production and quality of assigned producers. - Drives profitable sale of the Company's products including increasing sales of existing products, and the introduction and selling of new products as they are developed. - Develops the assigned producer group to improve the quality and quantity of the business we obtain from assigned producers. - Serves as the primary Company contact and representative with existing and prospective producers. - Keeps alert to industry changes, including WCIRB/NCCI rulings, forms, and coverage changes. Prospects and develops new business. - Prospects and prequalifies new producers to determine working relationship. - Appoints new quality producers; sets and monitors production expectations with each Agency. - Maintains a thorough knowledge of the geographic territory assigned with regard to production sources, competitor activity, and economic and demographic idiosyncrasies. - Directs activities pertaining to industry affairs and trade show events including exhibiting, special events and lead generation follow up. - Manages marketing research to help identify opportunities for management, product enhancements, new distribution channels and new geographic markets with growth potential. - Supports strategic programs to promote new products, reposition existing products and integrate diverse corporate philosophies to support overall marketing and Underwriting efforts. - Utilizes high level underwriting authority to effectively price Company's products. - Accepts or rejects complex risks, evaluating all risk characteristics (operations, financials, management, employees, prior experience, etc.) as compared to the average in its class and prices for profit within Company Underwriting guidelines. - Quotes retro, deductible plans, and other more complex pricing products and has a solid understanding of their various components. - Conducts customer presentations explaining these plans in detail. Delivers superior customer service through collaborative relationships. - Provides production support through producer visitations and by participating in underwriting and production presentations. - Provides personal assistance to agents and insureds through regular visits to outside locations such as producer's offices. - Utilizes company technology to be available to customers when needed. - Effectively communicates decisions and resolves agent/customer concerns promptly. - Presents Agency Management solutions to agency principals and ICW management team. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This role does not have direct reports but may mentor and/or train junior team members. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Business, Accounting, Statistics or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 5 years of related experience in underwriting required, 7 years preferred. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Current driver's license required. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS - Demonstrated success servicing the Company's clients and building and maintaining relationships with production sources. - Proven sales and effective relationship management skills. - Ability to apply fundamental to advanced Underwriting concepts, practices, and procedures in an area of specialization. - Ability to read and interpret documents such as submissions, loss control reports, and standard policy form/endorsements. - Demonstrated ability to lead special projects. - Ability to mentor and train professional and support staff. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS - Office environment - no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands and employees are regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear. - Role requires 40-50% travel to meet with clients, attend industry events, and develop new business opportunities. - Travel is usually limited to automobile but occasional air travel is required. - Requires regular visits to outside locations such as producer's offices. Role Description Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Structured Solutions, the successful candidate will be a passionate, results-driven underwriter with the experience and vision to grow our Structured Solutions portfolio. Working in close collaboration with our ceded reinsurance, legal, client relations, finance and claims teams, you will evaluate and execute program opportunities from end to end. Responsibilities - Preparing underwriting review documents and summaries for presentation to senior management for each assigned program, including plans for new business, renewal rate management, and expected retentions, all designed to position the division to meet its profit objectives. - Participating in underwriting reviews and conducting additional file reviews as needed. - Leveraging data and analytics to actively manage all programs and drive profitability through consistent monitoring of renewals, rate targets, retentions, trends, and lost business, on a monthly basis. - Developing a thorough understanding of each assigned program, including the relevant industries, their loss exposures, and any needed updates to program eligibility and coverage terms, in order to minimize unanticipated adverse exposures. - Proactively identify training opportunities at the Program Administrator level to strengthen line-of-business knowledge, and guiding Program Administrators in risk selection, pricing, coverage terms and conditions in alignment with authorities granted by Trisura. - Demonstrating a clear understanding of industry changes and their potential impact by line-of-business, and providing well-articulated recommendations during the account referral process. - Ensuring Program Administrator meet Trisura’s underwriting expectations and remain aligned with business plans through active management of underwriting guidelines, file reviews, and client relations meetings. - Collaborating with Actuarial, Finance, Claims, Operations, Compliance, Systems, and Legal teams as required. - Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with Program Administrators through regular on-site visits, conference calls, and overseeing the onboarding and implementation of new programs. - Leading new program opportunity due diligence reviews and overseeing the onboarding and implementation of new programs. - Successfully managing the renewal of current program relationships on an annual basis.
