Role Description RRC is seeking a talented Electrical Engineer IV - BESS to help us build the future of both U.S. and Canada energy production from both remote work locations and any one of our U.S. or Canadian office locations. RRC CORE VALUES - Client Satisfaction – understands the goal of always exceeding our client’s expectations - Employee Happiness – able to work well with others, communicate clearly with coworkers, promote a positive work environment, and mediate conflicts between team members - Quality Work - able to take ownership, work independently, prioritize workload, and deliver quality results on time while working on multiple projects simultaneously - Above and Beyond - versatile, flexible, able to anticipate the needs of the company, take the initiative, and willing to go out of your way to assist others ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Lead the engineering design and execution of utility-scale BESS projects from conceptual development through construction and commissioning - Review and stamp BESS electrical design packages for projects throughout the United States - Serve as the technical lead for BESS projects, providing guidance, mentorship, and technical oversight to engineers and designers - Design and review medium-voltage collection systems, AC and DC power systems, inverter/PCS systems, battery container integration, auxiliary systems, and protection and control schemes - Perform and oversee power system studies including load flow, short circuit, grounding, arc flash, protection coordination, ampacity, and loss analysis - Review and approve engineering calculations, design packages, technical reports, specifications, and construction drawings - Manage engineering scope, schedules, budgets, and resource allocation across multiple projects - Coordinate with project managers, clients, utilities, EPCs, equipment vendors, and internal multidisciplinary teams - Serve as a point of contact for clients and support proposal development, project scoping, and business development initiatives - Review and approve manufacturer equipment drawings, technical submittals, and vendor documentation - Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, QA/QC procedures, utility requirements, and project specifications - Identify technical risks, develop mitigation strategies, and resolve complex engineering challenges - Support procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup activities, including field visits and technical troubleshooting - Perform QAQC reviews on project deliverables produced by engineering staff - Contribute to the development and improvement of engineering standards, design guides, and best practices - Stay current on emerging BESS technologies, energy storage trends, utility requirements, and renewable energy market developments Qualifications - Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States required - 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in BESS, renewable energy, utility, transmission, distribution, or power systems engineering - Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or related field required - Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or Renewable Energy preferred - Demonstrated experience serving as a lead engineer or technical lead on utility-scale BESS projects - Extensive experience designing medium- and low-voltage electrical systems and associated infrastructure - Strong understanding of switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, protective relays, breakers, transformers, and protection systems - Experience with battery container systems, Energy Management Systems (EMS), Battery Management Systems (BMS), and SCADA integration - Experience designing inverter and PCS equipment and associated interconnections - Strong knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards including IEEE, NEC, NESC, NFPA, CSA, and utility interconnection requirements - Experience performing power system studies using ETAP, CYME, SKM, EasyPower, PSCAD, or similar software - Experience with modeling tools such as HOMER, Energy Toolbase, ESWare, or similar energy storage analysis platforms - Familiarity with utility-scale solar, wind generation, substations, and transmission systems - Experience supporting interconnections to transmission, distribution, substations, and renewable generation facilities - Construction support, field engineering, commissioning, or startup experience preferred - Strong leadership, mentoring, project management, communication, and client relationship skills - Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced environment - Ability to travel periodically (10%) throughout the United States as project needs require Benefits - Flexible work hours to accommodate work-life balance - Health, dental, and vision insurance - 401k matching - Bonus eligibility - Tuition reimbursement for certain pre-approved education pursuits - RRSP matching (Canada), 401k matching (US)
