Role Description The Principal Engineer is a senior technical leadership role responsible for the design, development, and delivery of advanced protection systems that safeguard electrical infrastructure from transient surges, lightning, and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) threats. This position applies advanced mathematical and engineering principles to develop innovative product and system designs that meet stringent performance, reliability, and regulatory requirements. - Lead the design, simulation, validation, and documentation of diode-based surge protection systems for power, data, and RF applications. - Serve as a technical authority and provide leadership across project teams, guiding complex engineering decisions. - Influence and direct efforts across multiple engineering disciplines, fostering collaboration and driving successful product development outcomes. Qualifications - Masters of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or similar field. - 10+ years of experience in Electrical Protection design. - Deep technical knowledge of surge protection, transient suppression, and EMI/EMC design. - Experience with materials development and reliability analysis in high-voltage or surge protection applications (e.g., ceramics, polymers, coatings, or metallization systems) is preferred. - Expertise in diode technologies (TVS, Zener, Schottky) and high-speed/high-power applications. - Strong experience in RF systems, data line protection, and power distribution networks. - Proficiency with simulation tools (SPICE, HFSS, CST, ADS) and PCB design tools (Altium). - Familiarity with MIL-STD-461, IEC 61000, and related compliance standards. - Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis skills. - Experience with lab testing, validation, and EMC test methods. - Ability to lead complex technical projects and cross-functional teams. - U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency required for ITAR compliance. Requirements - Provide architectural leadership for next-generation surge protection solutions across power, data, and RF applications. - Define and drive product and technology strategy, influencing design standards, engineering best practices, and roadmap innovation. - Perform advanced modeling and simulation (e.g., transient events, EMI/EMC, signal integrity) to inform design decisions. - Lead prototype development, validation, and formal qualification to industry standards (IEC, IEEE, MIL-STD). - Ensure designs meet performance, reliability, regulatory, and safety requirements, including ISR/DoD/ITAR compliance where applicable. - Oversee design reviews, ensuring technical rigor and adherence to company and industry standards. - Identify technical risks early and implement mitigation strategies to ensure successful project execution. - Lead failure analysis, root cause investigations, and corrective actions to improve product reliability. - Present technical concepts, design results, and solutions to internal teams and external stakeholders. - Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and regulatory requirements relevant to protection systems. Reports To Senior Engineering Manager Work Environment This role is designated as remote or in-office. This position can be carried out remotely or in an office setting. Employees may work from their home office, regularly collaborating with colleagues across various company sites during normal or extended business hours when necessary. Role Description The Electrical Engineer will lead the end-to-end technical execution of high-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) systems across utility-scale solar and battery energy storage projects. This role owns critical engineering decisions spanning utility interconnection, substation and transmission design optimization, and MV collection system performance—from early-stage development through financing, construction, commissioning, and into operations. The role requires a strong balance of: - High voltage substation & collection system design - Power system studies - Field-level equipment understanding - Real-world troubleshooting experience, including testing You will be expected to diagnose and resolve issues across protection systems, transformers, breakers, cables, and substation control systems. Beyond project delivery, you will lead root-cause analysis of system events and drive targeted upgrade and retrofit initiatives to improve fleet reliability, availability, and compliance. What You’ll Do - Lead design and technical review of HV substations (115kV–500kV), transmission interconnections, and MV collection systems (34.5kV–480V). - Direct EPCs, Engineers of Record, and consultants to optimize design, reduce execution risk, and maintain schedule and cost targets. - Own utility interconnection scope, including review of applications, steady-state and dynamic models, and technical negotiations with ISOs/utilities (e.g., CAISO, ERCOT). - Lead field-informed troubleshooting of system events, including relay operations, misoperations, nuisance trips, and equipment failures. - Perform root-cause analysis using relay event reports, oscillography, Substation SCADA data, and equipment diagnostics (e.g., DGA, infrared, insulation testing). - Define and implement upgrade and retrofit projects, including protection setting changes, control system tuning, equipment replacement, and design corrections to improve reliability and performance. - Provide NERC and regional regulatory (CAISO/ERCOT) compliance support, ensuring operational readiness and adherence to PRC and related standards. - Support Operations with ongoing technical issue resolution and performance optimization across the fleet. - Develop and maintain engineering standards, technical specifications, EPC exhibits, and testing protocols. - Witness and evaluate FAT/SAT, commissioning, and energization activities. - Support EPC RFPs and supply agreements by defining enforceable technical requirements. - Contribute to Independent Engineer (IE) diligence and project financing. - Drive cross-functional coordination to resolve permitting, regulatory, and technical constraints. Qualifications - Minimum 8+ years of experience leading technical scope for HV substations (345kV–500kV) and MV collection systems (up to 34.5kV) within an IPP, EPC, or engineering firm. - Proven experience managing EPCs, consultants, vendors, and cross-functional teams through project lifecycle execution. - Ability to independently diagnose and resolve plant and substation issues using relay data, SCADA, inverter logs, plant historian and equipment diagnostics, and drive fixes through to implementation. - Direct working knowledge of major power system equipment, including operation, failure modes, and troubleshooting. - Strong working knowledge of NERC PRC & MOD standards and regional requirements (CAISO, ERCOT) related to plant operation and compliance. - Deep understanding of HV/MV equipment, protection and control schemes, metering, substation SCADA, and design trade-offs (technical vs cost vs schedule). - Solid foundation in power system studies and modeling. - Proficiency with steady-state modeling tools (ETAP, SKM, DIgSILENT, or similar). - Advanced Excel skills for technical and financial analysis. - Familiarity with NEC, NESC, IEEE standards. - PE license preferred. - Preferred working knowledge of PSSE, PowerWorld, and PSCAD but not mandatory. - Bachelors in Electrical Engineering, Masters or PhD is a plus.
