Junior English Language Specialist - Subtitling

Role Description VSI’s Subtitling Technology and QC department is responsible for providing subtitling technical and style guide expertise to the business, upholding the company’s high linguistic and technical standards whilst carrying out QC, subtitling, proofreading, test evaluations and subtitling tool training amongst other tasks. We are looking for a proactive individual to join us as a Junior English Language Specialist in our department on a permanent basis. You will need to have a solid background in linguistics, be technically minded, have excellent time management, and organisational and communication skills. This is an exciting opportunity to work hands-on with leading subtitling tools and workflows, while building valuable experience and expanding your expertise in localisation. Fully remote applications considered. Key Responsibilities - Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of English grammar and spelling conventions - Produce English subtitles/closed captions, subtitle templates, transcriptions, translations, accessibility scripts, and voice-over scripts for corporate videos, broadcast material, and VOD platforms for a variety of high-profile clients - Proofread subtitles, captions, transcripts, and internal documents - Perform technical QC on English subtitle templates, correcting timing, positioning, and other technical elements - Support evaluations of freelance suppliers - Provide in-house linguistic assistance (e.g., terminology checks, style consistency) - Support the testing and implementation of new tools - Use subtitling software (e.g., EZTitles, OOONA) and internal tools - Assist in creating and updating language and subtitling guidelines for internal and external use - Advise on client-specific subtitling and language guidelines as required - Assist in testing ASR/STT and MT engines, assessing their accuracy based on content type and language Qualifications - English proficiency: Native-level command of English with excellent grammar, spelling, and style - Internship, freelance, or academic experience in subtitling, transcription, or proofreading (6–12 months+ is a plus) - Familiarity with different subtitling specifications and software, ideally EZTitles and OOONA - Technical aptitude and the ability to quickly learn new tools - Excellent organisational and time management skills - Ability to work independently in a fast-paced work environment - Strong attention to detail and accuracy - Self-motivation and initiative Desirable Skills - Degree in audiovisual translation or similar - Copywriting/creative writing experience - Knowledge of MT/ASR/STT post-editing - MT/ASR/STT engine testing experience - Ability to speak another language Benefits - Private medical insurance - Enrolment to company salary sacrifice pension scheme - Discounted gym membership - Cycle-to-work scheme - Travel card loan - Regular social activities
