Key Responsibilities - Payroll Processing - Own preparation and processing of weekly and biweekly payroll for 20,000+ employees - Ensure accuracy and timeliness by reviewing payroll data for completeness and resolving discrepancies - Serve as a lead resource for troubleshooting payroll issues and escalating as appropriate - Collaborate cross-functionally with HR, Benefits, Finance, and Time & Attendance teams - Payroll Tax Compliance - Lead periodic compliance audits across all payroll tax obligations to ensure ongoing compliance - Identify discrepancies and drive resolution with internal stakeholders - Build and maintain audit documentation, internal controls, and compliance tracking processes - Serve as the internal subject matter expert on payroll tax compliance matters - Own quarterly compliance tracking and ensure timely implementation of regulatory updates - Support SOX compliance requirements as applicable to payroll and tax activities - Tax Vendor Management - Serve as the primary point of contact for the company’s payroll tax vendor (BSI) - Ensure taxes are assigned accurately and processed on a timely basis - Monitor vendor performance and escalate issues to leadership as appropriate - Coordinate between the vendor and internal payroll operations to resolve discrepancies - Manage vendor configuration updates resulting from regulatory or system changes - Tax Configuration & Reconciliation - Own end-to-end payroll tax reconciliation and ensure accuracy of all tax filings - Monitor tax configuration in Workday Payroll to ensure proper withholding across all jurisdictions - Review and reconcile payroll tax adjustments, amended returns, and retroactive payments - Lead year-end tax activities including W-2 preparation, ACA reporting, and final reconciliations - Earnings, Deductions & System Configuration - Own configuration and maintenance of earnings and deductions in Workday Payroll - Partner with HR and Benefits to ensure accurate deduction setup including benefits and retirement plans - Validate system configuration changes and assess downstream payroll impact before deployment - Data Analysis & Reporting - Prepare ad-hoc, monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll reports ensuring accuracy and timeliness - Perform payroll data analysis to identify trends, errors, and process improvement opportunities - Own data reconciliation between payroll and internal systems (Time & Attendance, Accounting) - Process Improvement - Proactively identify and lead payroll process improvements, including post-implementation optimization - Own assigned process improvement initiatives from scoping through execution - Partner with cross-functional teams to drive system enhancements and best practices - Document processes and contribute to team cross-training and knowledge transfer Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field - 5+ years of payroll experience with deep knowledge of processing, compliance, and tax - Hands-on experience with Workday Payroll required; post-implementation experience strongly preferred - Demonstrated experience owning payroll tax compliance audits and vendor relationships - Familiarity with multi-state payroll tax laws, garnishments, and year-end reporting Skills & Abilities - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage large data sets accurately - Ability to operate independently, own complex workstreams, and drive to resolution without close direction - Effective communication and cross-functional collaboration skills - Advanced Excel proficiency (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, data modeling) - Ability to handle confidential information with integrity and professionalism Preferred Qualifications - CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) certification or active progress toward certification - Experience managing a payroll tax vendor relationship - Exposure to international payroll operations or expansion projects Benefits Explore our benefits site to discover all the perks and support we offer! Reporting to the Payroll Lead, you will own the day-to-day execution of payroll across the UK and additional European countries — ensuring every employee is paid accurately and on time, every cycle. What to Expect - Process accurate, timely payrolls for UK and European employees across multiple pay cycles and jurisdictions - Manage all payroll events end-to-end: new starter onboarding, leavers, salary changes, promotions, and benefit deductions - Act as the first point of contact for payroll queries from employees and internal stakeholders, resolving issues promptly and professionally - Ensure correct integration between payroll, HR, and finance platforms — flagging data gaps proactively - Supporting the existing payroll team to resolve issues and answer queries from the employee population Reporting & Reconciliation - Produce payroll journals and reports for Accounting and Treasury on schedule - Reconcile payroll data each cycle, investigating and resolving discrepancies before sign-off - Ensure payroll accounts are funded accurately and on time, in line with internal financial controls Regulatory Compliance - Complete all statutory filings and regulatory submissions across UK and European payrolls (e.g. RTI, P60s, country-specific social security filings) in conjunction with our payroll processor - Stay current on payroll legislation changes across relevant jurisdictions — particularly where they intersect with financial services regulation - Maintain accurate payroll records in line with data retention policies and security standards Controls & Governance - Follow and help maintain payroll policies and procedures, flagging gaps or risks to the Payroll Lead and Head of People Operations - Support internal and external payroll audits, providing accurate records and clear documentation - Apply strong data hygiene and access controls in line with our financial security standards Process Improvement - Identify recurring issues or inefficiencies in existing payroll workflows and propose practical solutions - Support automation and tooling initiatives to reduce manual effort and increase accuracy - Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement — raising problems with solutions, not just flags What We're Looking For Essential - Proven experience processing UK payroll end-to-end, including statutory compliance (RTI, auto-enrolment, statutory payments) - Hands-on experience with at least one additional European payroll jurisdiction (e.g. France, Germany, Belgium) - Confident working remotely and autonomously — manage deadlines and proactively communicate blockers - Strong attention to detail and numerical accuracy; you check your own work before submitting - Experience in a fintech, financial services, or mature scale-up environment - Comfortable with ambiguity — you can operate in environments where processes are still being built Desirable - CIPP qualification or working towards it - Experience with cloud-based payroll or HRIS platforms (e.g. HiBob, Deel) - Exposure to multi-currency payroll or cross-border employment arrangements - Experience supporting or preparing for payroll audits Our global team of 800+ people is spread across six continents.
