Role Description The Lead Structural Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership, discipline management, and engineering execution oversight for structural engineering activities across mining and EPCM projects. The role ensures that all structural designs, calculations, and deliverables meet project requirements, industry codes, safety standards, quality expectations, and schedule commitments. The incumbent will lead a team of structural engineers and designers, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and interface with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery. Qualifications - Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (Essential). - Registered Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng or equivalent) preferred. - 10+ years structural engineering experience within heavy industry or mining projects. - Strong EPCM project background is essential, including FEED and detailed design exposure. - Proven experience leading and managing structural engineering teams. - Extensive experience with mining infrastructure (surface + underground). - Experience with steel structures, reinforced concrete, foundations, plant structures, and mining support systems. - Proficiency in structural analysis software (e.g., MIDAS, STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, Prokon). - Strong understanding of relevant codes and standards (SANS, AISC, Eurocode, etc.). - Ability to interpret complex technical documentation and engineering drawings. - Proficient in MS Office and engineering management systems. Requirements - Lead the development, design, analysis, and review of structural engineering deliverables, calculations, specifications, and drawings. - Oversee structural engineering work for surface and underground mining infrastructure, including foundations, steel structures, conveyors, plants, chutes, tunnels, shafts, and support systems. - Ensure all designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements. - Perform and check complex structural calculations and finite element analysis (FEA) where required. - Approve discipline design deliverables and ensure technical correctness. - Provide strong EPCM-focused leadership in planning, executing, and managing structural engineering tasks throughout all project phases (concept, FEED, detailed design, construction support). - Work closely with Project Engineering, Project Controls, Procurement, Construction, and Client teams to ensure alignment to project baselines. - Support development of project execution strategies, discipline schedules, engineering workflows, and resource plans. - Participate in engineering reviews such as HAZOPs, Model Reviews, Design Reviews, and technical audits. - Coordinate structural engineering interfaces with civil, mechanical, electrical, piping, geotechnical, and construction disciplines. - Identify and resolve interdisciplinary issues through proactive communication and problem-solving. - Contribute to integrated engineering schedules and ensure timely delivery of structural deliverables. - Champion engineering quality through design verification, checking processes, and adherence to internal and client quality procedures. - Ensure health, safety, and environmental factors are incorporated into all designs. - Drive continuous improvement, cost-competitive execution, and value-engineering principles. - Lead, mentor, and develop structural engineering team members and designers. - Assign work, monitor performance, and ensure adequate staffing aligned with project commitments. - Support discipline knowledge sharing and professional development within the engineering department. - Maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, and external stakeholders. - Participate in technical meetings, design workshops, and project progress sessions. - Provide technical guidance, recommendations, and engineering insight to support client decision-making.
