Role Description Humane World for Animals, a global leader in animal advocacy and protection, is seeking a Shelter Outreach and Engagement for the Outreach, Engagement, and Training department. In this position you will lead the Shelter Outreach and Engagement team for the Outreach, Engagement and Training department. Build and strengthen partnerships with animal shelters, rescue organizations and national animal welfare partners in order to build a stronger animal protection movement. - Develops and directs the overall strategy for the Shelter Outreach and Engagement team including creating and implementing the team’s priorities, programs, and policy efforts; - Leads policy engagement with shelters and rescues by aligning Humane World priorities that intersect with animal shelters including companion animal issues and access to care. - Secures endorsements, contributes feedback on the effects of policies on animal shelters, serves as an expert in legislative matters, writes legislative comments, testifies as appropriate, and analyzes shelter data to inform policy efforts; - Builds and strengthens collaborative relationships with animal shelters and rescue organizations to support the adoption of data-driven practices in response to changes in the animal sheltering landscape and in alignment with the organization’s priorities. - Directly leads the Adopters Welcome training program, including managing contract employees, developing shelter-specific content and overseeing the shelter mentorship grant and training program; - Designs training and professional development content with the HumanePro team. Leads and coordinates virtual and in-person trainings and reviews and publishes content for HumanePro and Humane World through blogs, interviews, fact sheets, manuals, toolkits and website development; - Works closely with the Animal Care Expo team to solicit and review proposals for the annual conference, and ensure presentations are in service to the animal sheltering field; - Develops policies and internal and external messaging concerning the animal sheltering field. - Serves as a subject matter expert for media outlets on pet keeping trends, animal shelter and rescue messaging, and animal shelter-related policy efforts; - Oversees the Shelter and Rescue partner program and the outreach strategy that supports the placement of animals assisted by the organization’s cruelty and disaster response efforts; - Promotes and cultivates the organizational brand with animal shelters, rescue organizations and national animal welfare partners. - Manages the Shelter Outreach team to ensure that staff achieve their goals, including providing staff with guidance and advice, training, performance management, leadership development, and career development; - Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned. Qualifications - At least five years of experience in animal sheltering required; - Bachelor's degree in Nonprofit Management, or another related field, or equivalent work experience, required. Master’s degree preferred; - A minimum of nine (9) years of experience in project management, animal sheltering, animal welfare, or another related field required; - Management/supervisory experience required; - Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) strongly preferred; - Knowledge of animal protection issues that impact animal shelters, including companion animal policies and access to care policies strongly preferred; - Ability to review and analyze legislation as it pertains to animal shelters; - Ability to review and analyze trusted shelter and rescue data; - Leadership ability in work setting. Flexible, willing to learn, and anticipates the needs of self and staff; - Ability to set a positive tone for employees during their day; - Comfortable in a changing environment; able to meet deadlines; self-motivated and proactive; - Ability to manage challenges requiring problem resolution and conflict management with excellent interpersonal and intervention skills; - Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
