Role Description The Controller is a key member of the Finance team and is responsible for the accounting function for the entire company, both in Canada and the USA. The Controller reports directly to the Head of Finance and works closely with external advisors, including tax counsel, external accountants, and the Company’s lenders. The mission of the Controller is to help Füm achieve its vision by providing accurate, timely financial information to support business decision-making, ensuring the Company is compliant with government and other requirements across the jurisdictions in which it operates, and supporting the relationships with the Company’s financial and lender partners. Responsibilities - First 90 Days: Assess current accounting records, systems, filings, and processes to identify gaps, risks, and required fixes. Lead a prioritized plan to improve the reliability, compliance, and scalability of the accounting function. - Accounting Operations & Close: Own month-end close, reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, AP/AR, expense review, monthly management reporting and financial statement preparation. Ensure transactions are accurate, timely, and properly supported. - Payroll & Employee Payments: Manage payroll, reimbursements, expense payments, statutory remittances, and related reporting obligations. Ensure employee-related financial processes are accurate and completed on time. - Systems & Revenue Reconciliation: Manage accounting data flows between QBO, Shopify, Amazon, retail channels, and Fulfil ERP. Ensure sales, fees, returns, discounts, inventory movements, and payment activity are accurately recorded. - External Partner Management: Manage external bookkeeping, CPA, tax, and compliance partners, ensuring deliverables are accurate, timely, cost-effective, and aligned with Füm’s internal standards. - Cash Flow & Reporting: Lead cash flow forecasting, variance analysis, and reporting to leadership, lenders, and advisors. Provide timely financial information to support planning, cash management, and external reporting. - Tax, Compliance & External Advisors: Own GST/HST, sales tax, VAT, and other indirect tax compliance, while coordinating Canada/U.S. income tax filings, audit support, and external accountant relationships. Support customs duties, tariffs, and refund recovery processes. - Controls & Process Improvement: Own financial statement preparation, audit readiness, and scalable accounting controls. Identify process gaps, resolve root causes, and build repeatable procedures that improve accuracy, timeliness, and accountability. Key Performance Indicators - Data Quality: Accounting records contain accurate, complete, and consistent data. - Timeliness of Information: Records are current enough to support weekly and monthly executive decision-making and external reporting deadlines. - Compliance: The Company remains compliant with all tax, payroll, and regulatory obligations across Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia, and the EU. - Stakeholder Reporting: Lenders, external advisors, and other financial partners receive accurate, reliable, and timely information. Qualifications - Formal education in Accounting or Finance is required, with a CPA designation strongly preferred. - Experience as a Finance Manager, Controller, or equivalent role in a Canada/U.S. operating environment is expected. Requirements - Strong systems capability, including QuickBooks Online, financial data feeds, ERP integrations, and AI tools. - Strong knowledge of Canadian ASPE, financial reporting, month-end close, audit readiness, multi-jurisdiction tax compliance, and payroll processes. - Experience producing cash flow forecasts, lender reporting, and stakeholder reporting in a business with secured debt or external financing partners. - Strong problem-solving ability in ambiguous, fast-changing environments. - Clear written and verbal communicator who can work effectively with internal teams, external advisors, lenders, and other stakeholders.
