Job Description

Grant Writer

Climate Finance Solutions

Role Description As a Grant Writer at CFS, you’ll do more than write proposals. You’ll partner with climate innovators to develop competitive applications for federal and provincial grant funding, advising clients on project design and commercialization plans, while shaping partnership strategies that materially improve their chances of getting funded. We’re a fast-paced, fully remote team. Contractors who deliver consistently are considered for our Grant Development Lead role. Key Responsibilities - Work with senior staff, the Director of Grants, other grant writers, and the administrative team to bring high-quality proposals through the entire development process: project design and development, document preparation, and submission. - Support multiple proposal projects simultaneously, maintaining quality and meeting tight deadlines. - Draft complex technical narratives, work plans, budget justifications, letters of commitment, and other key elements of federal, provincial, and other public funding programs. - Conduct external research, including from peer-reviewed sources, and gather internal data to provide content for proposals. - Serve as a strategic advisor to client teams, refining project scope, commercialization plans, business development approaches, fundraising strategy, and organizational positioning before drafting begins, so proposals reflect a compelling funding strategy rather than just compliant documentation. - Liaise with external partners and stakeholders to support proposal development and consortium building. Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent). - Fluency in English. - Minimum of six years of grant writing experience; at least three years as the lead writer on funded grant proposals. - Strong scientific or technical knowledge relevant to climate solutions. - Experience securing grants from climate-focused federal and provincial agencies, including, but not limited to, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP), the Strategic Response Fund (SRF), Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Alberta Innovates, Investissement Québec, and CleanBC. - Clear and compelling writing style, with outstanding grammar and research skills. - Strong oral and written communication skills for working cooperatively with internal teams, clients, and external partners. - Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and other standard writing and collaborative content development platforms. - Ability to maintain project schedules and deadlines. - Self-motivated and able to work independently in a fast-paced startup environment. - Equipment, technical ability, flexibility, and temperament required to work fully remotely with intercontinental teams and clients, including weekday availability to check and respond to project communications. - Mission-driven, with a clear understanding of the urgency of addressing the climate crisis. Requirements - Graduate degree, particularly in a scientific or technical field (preferred). - Bilingual writing capability (English and French) and experience with Quebec-based or French-language funding programs (preferred). - Knowledge of climate sectors, including renewable energy, carbon management, energy storage/batteries, industrial decarbonization, critical minerals and materials, hydrogen and other clean fuels, grid technologies, transportation, sustainable agriculture, advanced manufacturing, nuclear, and more (preferred). - Pre-award research administration, grant management, or project management certification (e.g., PMP, CRA, CCRP) (preferred). Benefits - $95-135 CAD / $70-100 USD per hour, commensurate with experience. - Position Type: Contractor. - Location: Remote/Canada. Company Description Climate Finance Solutions (CFS) is a global consultancy that helps companies and organizations secure large-scale grant funding for climate solutions. To date, our team has secured over $1.6 billion in non-dilutive funding for clients across Canada, the US, Europe, Australia, and emerging markets worldwide. As a mission-driven company, we are committed to providing equitable access to the climate funding ecosystem and building the next generation of leaders in climate finance.
