Role Description Substack is looking for a Product Designer with “engineering characteristics.” By this we mean someone with interest in and experience with the implementation of user interfaces in code, particularly with LLMs. Key aspects of the role include: - Designing products, features, and interfaces from complex web dashboards to iOS and Android app surfaces. - Leveraging LLMs for prototyping and production, including pixel-fitting and bug-fixing. - Understanding the dynamics of product design in a startup environment. Responsibilities - Rapidly build context about disparate product areas, community dynamics, and industry norms. - Identify high-leverage opportunities and help make their pursuit practicable. - Design beautiful, usable, scalable interfaces and flows for various product zones. - Think holistically about the second-order effects on Substack as a product system. - Find ways to help creators and audiences build long-lasting, rewarding relationships. - Help diversify the kinds of creators Substack supports through novel media type support. - Shape the culture and processes of Design at Substack. Qualifications - All product design applications must link to or include a portfolio. - 3 years of experience designing software, especially with social networks or content systems. - High degree of competence with Figma. - High tolerance for uncertainty and ambiguity. - Interest in both independence and collaboration. Requirements - Portfolio demonstrating the capacity to craft design solutions. - Experience designing software interfaces. - Ability to work in uncertain and ambiguous environments. - Comfortable with both independent and collaborative work modes. • Prototype in Figma • Act as a bridge between design and engineering by using AI-assisted design & prototyping tools to accelerate ideation and delivery • Maintain prototype work in a repo (clear structure, runnable setup, repeatable demos) • Ensure prototypes include keyboard basics, semantic structure, and responsive layouts • Use a text-to-code tool to generate a starting point, then edit and improve the output • Iterate quickly based on feedback and evolving requirements • Contribute to problem framing, IA, and research synthesis as teams define the new experience • Plan and run lightweight usability sessions, then adjust prototypes based on findings • Use internal shadcn-based components and keep UI consistent with WEX standards

Role Description This is a dedicated systems design role focused on the experience layer of our design system. You'll define how our system, Thumbprint, translates into real product experiences, owning the patterns, flows, component compositions, and documentation that enable every team to design and ship with consistency at scale. The focus of this role is craft and usability: interaction quality, platform-native patterns, and the guidance that helps humans and agents apply our system across our various product experiences. What you’ll do - Own the patterns, flows, and component compositions that power product experiences across iOS, Android, and web, ensuring consistency and quality at every layer. - Design and ship reusable components with a high bar for craft, including well-defined states, variants, responsiveness, and interaction models. - Define and maintain platform-native interaction patterns that make our product feel cohesive and intentional across surfaces. - Evolve Thumbprint over time to keep pace with modern UI patterns, platform conventions, and the changing needs of our product. - Create clear, opinionated documentation and usage guidance, including best practices, anti-patterns, and decision frameworks teams can act on. - Enable teams to adopt and extend the design system through onboarding, critique, and hands-on partnership. - Collaborate with technical partners to ensure Thumbprint works within AI-driven workflows, including Claude Code, Figma MCP, and our internal prototyping tools. - Work closely with Engineering partners to define, align, and maintain parity between design components in Figma and their coded implementation, ensuring a seamless design-to-development workflow and single source of truth. - Contribute to the naming, taxonomy, and structure so Thumbprint is legible and usable by both people and AI tools. Qualifications - 6+ years of product design experience, with meaningful time owning or evolving a design system at a product company. - Deep familiarity with platform conventions across iOS, Android, and web, including how great apps are structured and how that shapes interaction design. - High craft bar for visual design and component work; you build components that are polished, production-ready, and designed to scale. - Expert-level Figma skills, including component architecture, variables, tokens, and auto-layout. - Comfortable working across the design-to-code workflow; you know your way around Storybook, design tokens, and GitHub, and can collaborate closely with engineers on implementation. - Strong written communication skills; you write documentation that is clear, opinionated, and easy to act on. - Active interest in how design systems evolve in AI-driven product development, including how system structure and documentation enable teams and tools to work more effectively. - Deep knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG AA) and a commitment to ensuring all components and patterns are inclusive and usable.
