Staff Software Engineer (AI Platform - AI Acceleration)
CoinbaseWe're building an open financial system for the world.
Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of? At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system. To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems. Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be. While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported. Coinbase is on a mission to become an "AI-Native" company by 2028, fundamentally transforming how we operate across all functions. As an Staff Software Engineer (AI Growth Lead) , you will drive AI adoption across Coinbase by working within one or more AI Growth Pods — internal accelerators that partner with non-engineering functions (e.g., Finance, HR, Legal, Operations, Marketing, Security) to identify, prototype, and scale high-impact AI automation solutions. You will serve as the AI Automation DRI (Directly Responsible Individual) for your assigned pods, driving initiatives from ideation to initial implementation and broader productionalization, while ensuring these solutions deliver tangible ROI and pave the way for broader AI adoption. This role requires a unique blend of strategic thinking, hands-on technical ability, and exceptional cross-functional collaboration. What You'll Do: Lead AI Opportunity Discovery: Partner with leaders and teams across the organization to deeply understand workflows, identify pain points, and uncover high-leverage opportunities for AI automation and efficiency gains. Translate complex business challenges into actionable AI use cases. Design & Prototype AI Solutions: Apply advanced GenAI techniques, including large language models (LLMs) and Agentic AI, to rapidly design, build, and iterate on functional prototypes (e.g., AI agents, custom copilots, intelligent workflows) that address business needs. Write high-quality, well-tested code in Python and Golang to support these solutions. Deploy Sustainable Solutions: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to evolve prototypes into scalable, secure, production-grade AI solutions aligned with long-term organizational goals. Act as an Internal Consultant & Accelerator: Provide expert guidance on AI capabilities, responsible AI usage, prompt engineering best practices, and strategic integration of AI into daily operations. Mentor team members on design principles, coding standards, and AI productivity tools adoption. Drive Adoption & Enablement: Pilot new AI solutions with functional teams, gather feedback, iterate on prototypes, and support adoption to ensure demonstrable value and smooth transitions. Collaborate with Core AI Teams: Partner with central AI Platform and DevX teams to leverage existing infrastructure, contribute to shared knowledge bases, and ensure scalability and security of solutions. Ensure Responsible AI: Work with Security, Legal, and Compliance teams to ensure all AI solutions adhere to strict security, privacy, and ethical guidelines, especially for sensitive data and high-risk workflows. Measure & Communicate Impact: Define success metrics, track ROI, and effectively communicate the value delivered by AI initiatives to stakeholders. Stay Ahead of the Curve: Continuously research and experiment with emerging AI models, tools, and industry best practices to bring cutting-edge solutions to Coinbase. What We're Looking For: Experience: 8+ years of experience in software engineering or a highly analytical, operational, or technical role, with at least 1+ years focused on applied AI, Generative AI, or intelligent automation. Deep AI & Automation Expertise: Strong understanding of LLM capabilities, limitations, and architectures (e.g., RAG, agents, fine-tuning concepts). Hands-on experience with AI tools and platforms (e.g., enterprise LLMs like Gemini/Claude, no-code/low-code automation platforms, agent frameworks LangChain/LangGraph, Python). Proven ability to rapidly prototype and demonstrate working solutions. Background in AI/LLM infrastructure is a plus. Strong Software Engineering Skills: Proven expertise in designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production services, with a strong understanding of microservices architecture. Ability to write high-quality, well-tested code that meets customer needs. Strong technical skills in system design, coding, and debugging complex technical issues to enhance system reliability and scalability. Exceptional Business Acumen: Demonstrated ability to understand complex business processes and translate them into technical requirements and AI opportunities.

RectangleAt Rectangle, we're solving the single biggest unsolved problem in freight: data fragmentation. The information about a shipment is as valuable as the shipment itself, but today's logistics ecosystem is a mess of incompatible systems, making it impossible to move the data that moves freight. This creates all kinds of large and expensive problems. Freight brokers, shippers, and logistics service providers all operate in silos, burning tens of billions of dollars and countless hours on manual workarounds that really shouldn't even have to exist in the first place. In turn, we see a staggering domino effect; anything from simple but annoying things like shipments getting delayed, to available capacity going unused, or missed revenue due to pricing asymmetries.

In turn, we see a staggering domino effect; anything from simple but annoying things like shipments getting delayed, to available capacity going unused, or missed revenue due to pricing asymmetries. We’re rapidly making progress towards solving those challenges. This is an incredible opportunity to fundamentally reshape how trillions of dollars of goods move globally, unlocking unprecedented levels of efficiency and revenue for our customers. About you You have production coding experience on a high caliber and high velocity team. We're a small team, with 3 engineers owning everything; development, testing, infrastructure, and operations. You should be comfortable moving across that entire stack. You actually enjoy talking to customers and know how to ask the right questions. You can listen to what they need, translate that into clear technical requirements, and use those insights to shape both our product strategy and implementation details. Must have Strong experience with TypeScript and Golang (or VM/runtime languages) An understanding of DDD, CQRS, and event-sourcing patterns Can design and build public-facing APIs Experience with a relational OTLP database (like Postgres) Experience with a distributed log platform (like Kafka, Kinesis) Nice to have Exposure to logistics (or an adjacent core industry such as manufacturing) Experience with patterns of workflow and durable execution engines Terraform or similar IaC tools Balancing best-practices and customer value in a startup setting Why join us Growth We're working with some of the top tech-enabled companies in logistics. We've proven product-market fit and demand, and right now our biggest challenge is building fast enough to meet it. Greenfield opportunity Help us reshape the foundational infrastructure of a multi-trillion dollar industry. We're starting from first-principles and are not iterating on someone else's playbook. Ownership No need to ask for permission to build things that deliver value to our customers. You’ll get end to end ownership over products that enable real revenue and efficiency for our customers. Team We’re a small and highly motivated product team who have worked on anything from foundational technology at Flexport and Echo Logistics, self-driving cars, to core AI experiences and products at Google and scalable infrastructure at New Relic. There is zero bureaucracy, and we want to keep it that way. Investors We’re backed by leading institutional investors in our industry, as well as strategic industry angels from leading software and logistics companies.
