Octopus Energy Group

Title: Always on the lookout for Brilliant Humans - Power Market Edition! Location: Worldwide Workplace: Remote, Full Time Category: Energy Trading Job Description: We are looking for great people to join our power trading business, but there's probably a few things you should know first... We don’t do things the traditional way. Not in trading, not anywhere really. There’s no big hierarchy, no layers of sign-off, no hiding behind process. We’ve built our own tech, we make our own decisions, and we move quickly because we can. As a company, we are always learning - innovation means constant evolution and change - and as an exciting result, we are looking for experienced team members across the globe with incredible experience in power trading businesses looking for their next move! Are you an experienced professional with experience in Power Trading businesses looking for a new, exciting and start-up role to develop in? At Octopus Energy Trading, we’re on a mission to reshape the future of energy. As part of Octopus Energy Group, we’re creating an innovative approach to trading that will accelerate the transition to a Net Zero world. With the growth of renewables and a push toward decarbonising heating and transport, greater flexibility in the grid is essential. We are building cutting-edge technology to optimise everything from domestic EV charging to grid-scale batteries, to meet the global demand for energy flexibility. We’re looking for passionate and unconventional thinkers to join us on this journey, bringing a diversity of experience and ideas to shape a more efficient, flexible, and sustainable energy system. You might be used to places where trading sits in a box. It doesn’t here. We work closely with the people building the tech, the people talking to customers, the people shaping the future of the business. It means you see more, influence more, and yes, occasionally deal with a bit more chaos too. We’re pretty obsessive. About the market, about the detail, about how things actually work in the real world. We think about the system a lot. A lot, a lot. How energy flows, where it breaks, how it could be better. And then we try to fix it. Please register your interest in a role with Octopus Energy Trading and let us know what unique experience you could bring! A bit more about a role in Octopus Energy Trading... Where do we operate? Originally focusing on the GB market and now expanding into Europe and Asia, we are now looking to take our experience to new countries so would love to here from you, wherever you are in the world! What do we look for? We’re looking for people with awesome experience in the power trading world, someone who can talk through the numbers, the risk, the strategy. But actually, what really matters is how you think. You’re curious. You don’t just accept how things are done. You’ll question it, pull it apart, rebuild it better. You’re a grafter, but a smart one. You know where effort matters and where it doesn’t. You won’t spend hours polishing something no one needs. And yes, writing a long meeting agenda might drain you slightly. You take ownership. Proper ownership. Not “that’s not my job”, more “I’ll figure it out”. Because here, you kind of have to. Our Traders... Our Traders develop transformational solutions and rapidly implement these to meet the urgent and global need for energy flexibility. You’ll be responsible for creating value from Power markets, trading the volatility, and managing our exposure. You’ll also work on the high-level trading approach, supporting in the evolving design and improvement of our in-house analytical tools. Our Data Team... With an increase in variable and distributed supply, using data for trading and forecasting has never been more important. Octopus has always had a tech-first approach, and our trading and analytics tools are all built in-house. We look for experts in building data pipelines bringing together internal and external data to create market leading insights using both classical and ML techniques. This includes looking at demand, renewables and transmission system fundamentals forecasts focussed to begin with on the GB intraday power market
