Officer position responsible for providing overall underwriting excellence for Public and Private Directors & Officers Liability Insurance, including product design, regulatory compliance, and system enablement, in accordance with the company’s strategic plans. In this officer-level role, you’ll shape product design and policy language, ensure regulatory readiness, and partner with key stakeholders to deliver system enablement and a best-in-class underwriting experience aligned to the company’s strategic priorities. This role is well suited for a leader who brings deep expertise in underwriting and a strong command of policy language and product development—gained through a blend of underwriting, claims, and/or legal experience. You’re comfortable navigating complex issues, balancing risk and growth, and driving decisions that improve portfolio performance. This role is open to candidates based in any CNA office location, with a strong preference for the Chicago area or the New York City metro (including surrounding Northeast locations). JOB DESCRIPTION: Essential Duties & Responsibilities Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines: 1. Provides end‑to‑end product leadership for assigned product lines, including product design, ongoing governance, compliance oversight, and lifecycle management aligned with enterprise strategy. Leads policy form development, maintenance, and enhancements to ensure products meet regulatory, underwriting, and market requirements. 2. Ensures the achievement of continued profitability, growth and/or operational efficiencies for a product line through assessment of risk tolerance, market appetite and emerging risk issues. 3. Evaluates underwriting performance based on financial analysis. Includes rate, reserve adequacy, operational, planning and product reviews. Provides results to members of the underwriting management team and develops plans to resolve issues. 4. Monitors the usage and profitability of alternative pricing programs. 5. Drives adherence to underwriting authority delegation, audit criteria and catastrophe management, and product governance standards for Directors & Officers Liability . 6. Oversees regulatory filings strategy, including coordination with Legal and Compliance, to support product changes, new offerings, and multi‑state implementation. 7. Partners with technology and operations teams to support product implementation in underwriting systems, resolve system‑related issues, and ensure alignment between product intent, system configuration, and underwriting execution. 8. Collaborates with business partners in Risk Control, Actuarial, Claim, Operations and Compliance to address governance and compliance issues related to underwriting practices. 9. Provides guidance and direction in the development and delivery of underwriting, product, systems, forms, and guideline training to ensure consistent execution across the organization. 10. May take lead responsibility for the development of underwriting strategies and position papers for emerging issues when assigned. 11. May maintain relationships with branches, brokers, agents and customers to assess risk tolerance, market appetite and emerging issues. May perform additional duties as assigned. Reporting Relationship VP and above Skills, Knowledge and Abilities 1. In-depth technical knowledge of underwriting theories and practices within the insurance field. 2. Ability to effectively interact and communicate with all levels of external and/or internal business partners within scope of responsibility, team and/or matrix environment. 3. Leadership and management skills, demonstrating integrity and professionalism. 4. Ability to drive results by identifying, and resolving problems within scope of responsibility. 5. Knowledge of the insurance industry, its products and services. 6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software. Education and Experience 1. Bachelor's degree with Master's preferred in a related discipline, or equivalent. 2. Typically a minimum of 10 years of related work experience, with five years management experience. 3. Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or RPLU certifications and related roles. *LI-KC1 *LI-Hybrid In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $152,000 to $242,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
