Senior Software Engineer

STR’s Analytics and Command & Control (AC2) Division designs, develops and deploys novel technologies to solve challenging national security problems. The Decisions Systems Group in the AC2 Division builds algorithms and tools to enhance trust in AI systems and help humans make the best decisions possible. We create solutions that make a difference in mission planning, modeling and simulation, AI decision aids, and more. Our portfolio spans trusted AI, Command & Control (C2), graph-based reasoning, autonomous systems, and human-machine interfaces. Current applications include a simulation platform for training and testing AI autonomy solutions, evolutionary algorithms for resilient workflow optimization, evaluating the reliability and responsibility of autonomous systems, and language models enhanced with domain-specific simulations to accurately assess the feasibility of scientific claims. The Role: As a Senior Software Engineer at STR, you will support the design and implementation of flexible software solutions, collaborate with multi-disciplinary project teams and provide high-impact, unique solutions for our customers’ most important problems. You will initially support system integration and testing for a mature mission planning solution transitioning to an active user community. Subsequent projects will be driven by the intersection of your interests with our expanding R&D portfolio. This role allows for remote work in collaboration with STR’s Woburn, MA and Arlington, VA offices, taking advantage of STR’s flexible, hybrid work environment. The role will involve periodic travel, up to 20%. Who You Are: - BS or MS or equivalent experience in computer science or other software development related field - 3-5+ years of relevant experience (BS degree), or 1-2+ years (MS) - Fluent in Java and its ecosystem, including object-oriented programming (OOP) principles - Demonstrated experience writing maintainable, well documented code and APIs - Specific demonstrated experience in Linux and container-based software (e.g., Docker) - U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance Even Better: - Demonstrated experience with DevOps and CI/CD pipelines - Experience using Python - Demonstrated ability to adopt new languages, libraries, and technologies - Experience in intelligence or military-related mission areas - Active security clearance STR is a growing defense technology company. Pay Information Full-Time Salary Range: $140,000.00 to $170,000 The salary range listed is based on external market data. Role Description CTG is hiring a highly skilled Mainframe Systems Programmer to support a z/OS 3.1 migration, with a focus on JES2 exits, RACF security, and workload automation integration. This role is ideal for someone experienced in system-level programming, security remediation, and mainframe modernization initiatives. Location: Remote Duration: 9 months Key Responsibilities: - Analyze and enhance JES2 exit logic and job submission workflows - Implement RACF SURROGAT-based submitter identity remediation - Modify and validate JCL submission processes (USER=xxxx enforcement) - Integrate with IBM Workload Scheduler (IWS/OPC/IZWS) environments - Support z/OS 2.x to 3.1 migration, ensuring consistent job execution - Perform testing, deployment, and regression validation with zero downstream impact - Troubleshoot JES2, RACF, and scheduler-related system issues Qualifications - 7+ years in z/OS Systems Programming - Strong expertise in JES2 exits (development, debugging, enhancement) - Deep knowledge of RACF, including SURROGAT and batch security - Experience with IBM Workload Scheduler (IWS/OPC/IZWS) - Solid understanding of JCL, job submission flows, and mainframe security architecture - Proven experience supporting z/OS upgrades/migrations Requirements - Experience in large-scale enterprise mainframe environments (preferred) - Familiarity with regulated environments and change management processes (preferred) - Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent work experience) - Excellent verbal and written English communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group are required.
