Title: Part Time - Processing Assistant Location: Longview United States Job Description: Description Coordinates and performs a variety of materials processing duties on behalf of the Longview Public Library; participates in cataloging library items; updates and maintains catalog records; repairs and maintains collection materials; and performs other related duties as assigned. Examples of Duties Processes and assists in ensuring the Library's collection materials are made available to patrons in a timely manner. Assists with cataloging new materials; researches bibliographic records and saves related information to the Library's catalog. Prepares and maintains original catalog records for various types of local items including, but not limited to, equipment and vertical files; creates and maintains templates for original cataloging. Barcodes materials; adds item records and new subject headings; prints labels. Updates and maintains bibliographic records; identifies and corrects spelling, punctuation, and/or other records errors. Reviews and monitors books from Processing area for accuracy; identifies errors and makes necessary corrections; checks in and distributes library materials to various departments. Sorts and processes donated items, books sale materials, and books for sale over the internet. Assists in preparing library materials for shelving; adds book jackets and/or mylar covers. Participates in repairing and maintaining collection materials; weeding materials according to crew method; cleans and mends books; replaces worn items as required. Performs other related duties as assigned or required. Minimum Requirements Associate's Degree in Library Science or related field, and one years cataloging/materials processing experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License. Physical Demands/Work Environment Work is performed in a public library environment. Subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds. Must be able to push/pull library carts and lift/carry library materials. The City of Longview does not offer benefits to part-time or temporary positions. However, instead of paying into Social Security the employee and the City will pay into an alternative retirement system that the employee will be able to access upon the termination of their part-time/temporary employment.
