How You'll Help: As a Data Engineer II, you will be a key architect in building and maintaining our specialized higher education data warehouse. You will ensure that institutional data is reliable, high-performing, and delivered in a timely manner, directly enabling university leaders to make informed, strategic decisions. What You Will Do: - Develop: Design, build, and deploy robust ETL/ELT solutions using SQL and Python. - Test & Deploy: Perform comprehensive unit testing and participate in code reviews to ensure data integrity and system reliability. - Analyze: Monitor and evaluate pipeline performance trends to proactively prevent bottlenecks and system failures. - Troubleshoot: Diagnose and resolve complex ETL issues in real-time, identifying root causes to prevent recurrence. - Collaborate: Work closely with analysts and senior engineers to expand reporting models that meet evolving university goals. You Will Be a Good Fit For This Role If You Have: - Previous experience in the Higher Education or EdTech sector. - 3+ years of professional experience specifically in ETL/SQL development and data engineering. - Expertise in SQL: Strong proficiency in developing complex queries, analyzing data, and managing system integrations. - Data Architecture Knowledge: A solid understanding of data warehouse concepts, structures, and dimensional modeling. - Coding Proficiency: Experience with at least one object-oriented programming language (Python, Java, etc.). - An Analytical Mindset: The ability to think on your fly and approach technical challenges with a solution-oriented focus. - Autonomy: A drive to explore technical hurdles and find solutions with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment. Nice To Have’s Include: - Experience with AWS tools (Redshift, S3, Glue) or other major Cloud Service Platforms. - Exposure to NoSQL data transformation approaches. - Proficiency in translating complex business requirements into technical SQL specifications. Projects You Will Work On: - Higher Ed Data Warehouse Expansion: Scaling our core warehouse to accommodate new data sources and institutional partners. - KPI Modeling: Refining and expanding reporting models to track student learning outcomes and financial sustainability. - Pipeline Modernization: Optimizing existing ETL processes to leverage modern cloud-native features for faster processing. Location: HelioCampus has two locations, Bethesda, MD and Chapel Hill, NC. This specific role is primarily remote, with occasional travel to an office or client site. The Data Migration Specialist will extract, transform, and load client data from their legacy cultural heritage system(s) into Lyrasis-operated, open-source software platforms. Lyrasis- hosted platforms today include ArchivesSpace, CollectionSpace, and DSpace. The Data Migration Specialist will also create and maintain the tools used for such migrations. The ideal candidate will provide excellent technical support and customer service, effectively deal with stressful situations and meet firm deadlines. This individual must be able to work with other project managers and client stakeholders to define functional requirements, communicate complex issues effectively to all parties, work in a fast-paced environment on time sensitive projects, and possess a great attitude. Duties/Job Responsibilities: - Analyze prospective client data in order to determine the feasibility of and time estimate for a prospective migration project. - Manage migration projects for Lyrasis clients by producing project plans and timelines for clients, adhering to these deadlines, generating realistic expectations, and communicating clearly with clients and other stakeholders. - Analyze clients' legacy data/data models, and advise them on the best way to clean-up, manipulate and prepare their data for migration into Lyrasis ‐hosted platforms. - Collaborate with clients with creating data maps, including consulting on solutions for data fields that do not map directly and identifying data functionality tradeoffs in the target system for different mapping options. - Develop, maintain, and document migration tooling to facilitate the extraction, transformation and loading of legacy data that may also be re-purposed for other migration projects. - Perform special data manipulation and data cleanup projects on an as-needed basis. - Provide excellent technical support to Lyrasis hosting clients. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Knowledge of and experience with cultural heritage organizations' operations, workflows, data/metadata, and repository infrastructure. - Knowledge of current and emerging content and encoding standards for metadata, such as EAD, IIIF, MARCXML, MODS, METS, RDA, and SPECTRUM. - High comfort level with Unix/Linux, a shell prompt, scripting, PostgresSQL/SQL, or other relational databases, and wrangling data in XML, JSON, and CSV formats, and using APIs to retrieve and update data. - Familiarity with data ETL tools and techniques. - The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. - Strong analytical skills. - Strong customer service focus. - Excellent time and project management skills; ability to estimate time effectively. - Ability to succeed in a team environment and in a remote organization with minimum direction. - A commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where differences and complexities in background, cultures, values, and viewpoints are valued.
