Role Description - Lead and manage one or more software development teams in an Agile/Scrum environment, ensuring clarity of goals, priorities, and execution. - Own end-to-end responsibility for development team outcomes, including hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, promotions, and succession planning. - Create an environment of trust, inclusion, and continuous learning; actively develop future leaders and strengthen team capability over time. - Ensure the teams operate efficiently and productively regardless of team member location and time zone; establish effective communication and decision-making cadences. - Drive predictable delivery by partnering with Product and Project Management on planning, scope management, capacity considerations, and dependency management, with transparent status reporting. - Ensure the teams are aware of and comply with corporate policies, procedures, and required controls, including secure development expectations for enterprise software. - Foster a culture of collaboration, constructive conflict, accountability, and results; remove obstacles and improve processes that slow teams down. - Collaborate with globally distributed Quality Engineering, Product Management, Project Management, Operations, Support, IT, Docs, UX, Security, and other stakeholders to successfully build, deliver, and maintain the products. - Partner closely with Quality Engineering (QE) leadership to align on quality strategy, support effective test automation collaboration, and ensure shared accountability for release readiness. - Support and/or perform Scrum leadership responsibilities (directly or via designated Scrum Masters) to ensure effective Agile ceremonies, continuous improvement, and healthy team execution. - Promote a customer-focused mindset by incorporating customer impact into prioritization and tradeoffs; support customer escalations and ensure timely follow-through when issues arise. - Establish and maintain strong engineering practices, including coding standards, peer reviews, design reviews, and maintainable architecture decisions that support long-term product health. - Drive adoption and maturity of modern software development practices (e.g. continuous integration, automated quality checks, DevOps practices appropriate for on-premises products, and disciplined release processes). - Lead technical debt management and modernization planning in partnership with architects and senior engineers, balancing near-term delivery with long-term maintainability. AI-First Mindset Requirement - This role requires embracing an AI-first approach to work, where GenAI and agentic AI tools are used as practical accelerators for engineering productivity and quality; with appropriate human oversight. - The ideal candidate proactively identifies where AI can streamline development workflows (e.g. design exploration, code scaffolding, refactoring support, unit test generation assistance, documentation drafts, and defect analysis), while maintaining strong standards for security, intellectual property protection, privacy, and maintainability. - This mindset includes comfort with rapid tool evolution, willingness to experiment, and the ability to coach teams on effective and responsible AI usage. Focus Areas - AI Standards Development: Establish team guidelines for AI tool usage, responsible AI practices, and quality expectations. - AI-Enhanced Engineering Workflows: Drive adoption of AI-assisted practices that improve throughput and reduce toil while preserving code quality. - Cross-functional AI Collaboration: Partner with stakeholders (including QE, Security, Product, and Support) to identify high-value AI-enabled improvements. - AI Change Management: Lead teams through AI tool adoption, training, and workflow changes; share learnings and repeatable patterns. - Innovation Identification: Spot emerging AI capabilities relevant to organizational goals and customer outcomes; pilot thoughtfully and scale what works. Qualifications - People Management: 4–7+ years leading direct and/or indirect reports. - Software Development: 9+ years experience delivering commercial enterprise software. - Proven success leading development teams using Agile/Scrum to deliver high-quality releases predictably. - Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, architecture, and tradeoffs in large, long-lived codebases. - Experience partnering effectively with QE leaders/teams to drive shared quality outcomes and release readiness. - Excellent communication, listening, and collaboration skills; ability to influence across functions and levels. - Experience working with geographically and culturally diverse teams and stakeholders. - Experience with modern engineering practices such as continuous integration, automated quality checks, and disciplined build/release processes appropriate for on-prem enterprise products. - Experience creating, managing, and delivering against realistic plans (scope, milestones, dependencies). - Ability to tolerate ambiguity, be a self-starter, manage time and priorities effectively, and align resources to achieve goals. Additional Requirements - Experience with several of the following (or equivalent): C#, .NET, SQL Server and/or Oracle, REST APIs, Azure DevOps (or similar ALM tools), source control (Git), build and release pipelines, and test automation collaboration practices. - Experience modernizing or maintaining on-prem enterprise software, including disciplined release/versioning approaches and supportability considerations.
