Job Description

Senior Enterprise Database Architect

InterScripts, Inc.

• One of our Wisconsin’s premier academic health systems, is seeking a Senior Enterprise Database Architect to lead a comprehensive performance optimization and architecture assessment initiative across their database ecosystem. • This is a high-impact, hands-on engagement where you’ll work directly with clinical and IT leadership to ensure the data infrastructure powering Epic’s Cogito and Caboodle platforms — as well as the broader Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server estate — is tuned, resilient, and architected for long-term scalability. • Conduct a full architecture review of Epic’s Cogito (operational reporting data warehouse) and Caboodle (enterprise analytics data warehouse) implementations. • Assess ETL pipelines, Clarity-to-Caboodle data flows, index strategies, and query execution plans for performance bottlenecks. • Validate Cogito/Caboodle configuration against Epic best practices and recommend tuning adjustments. • Partner with Epic analysts and report writers to optimize Chronicles, Clarity, and Caboodle query performance. • Perform deep-dive performance tuning across Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL Server instances supporting clinical, financial, and ancillary systems. • Analyze AWR/ASH reports (Oracle) and DMV/Query Store diagnostics (SQL Server) to identify resource contention, wait states, and optimization opportunities. • Review database configurations, memory allocation, I/O subsystems, and storage architecture for both platforms. • Develop and implement indexing strategies, query rewrites, partitioning schemes, and maintenance plans. • Map the complete database landscape: inventory all Oracle and SQL Server instances, versions, patch levels, and dependencies. • Assess high availability and disaster recovery configurations (Always On AG, Data Guard, RAC) and recommend improvements. • Evaluate security posture including encryption, access controls, auditing, and compliance with HIPAA/HITECH requirements. • Deliver a comprehensive architecture assessment report with prioritized remediation roadmap and executive-level recommendations. • Provide knowledge transfer sessions and runbook documentation for the internal DBA team.

Job Requirements

  • 12+ years of enterprise database architecture and administration experience across Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server in large healthcare environments
  • Deep hands-on expertise with Epic Cogito, Caboodle, Clarity, and Chronicles database layers, not just awareness, but real tuning and architecture experience. Should be Epic Certified
  • Proven track record of leading full-stack database performance engagements: assessment, diagnosis, tuning, and documentation
  • Expert-level knowledge of Oracle performance internals (AWR, ASH, SQL Profiles, RAC, Data Guard, partitioning)
  • Expert-level knowledge of SQL Server performance internals (Query Store, DMVs, execution plans, Always On AG, columnstore, In-Memory OLTP)
  • Strong understanding of healthcare data flows, HL7/FHIR integrations, and HIPAA-compliant database security practices
  • Ability to communicate architecture findings and recommendations to both technical teams and executive leadership
  • Epic certification in Cogito, Caboodle, or Clarity administration – Mandatory
  • Oracle OCP or OCM certification; Microsoft Data Platform certifications (DP-300 or equivalent)
  • Experience with database migration, consolidation, or cloud-readiness assessments (Azure SQL, OCI)
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools such as SolarWinds DPA, Idera, Foglight, or Oracle Enterprise Manager
  • Prior consulting or contract engagement experience with health systems of similar scale

Benefits

  • Competitive contract rates commensurate with senior architect-level experience
  • Direct engagement with a marquee health system — real problems, real impact
  • Potential for extension or transition into ongoing managed services engagements
  • Backed by InterScripts’ onshore and nearshore delivery teams for collaborative support
