The Role The primary responsibility of an Executive Underwriter is further develop personal relationships and underwriting acumen which will be key components in expanding our US property distribution and driving growth of the direct US Open Market platform. The Executive Underwriter will report to the VP of Underwriting based on geography and need. After continued growth for the US Property team, and projected future growth, we are looking to add additional members to our team. We are open to all major retail and wholesale brokers and we utilize a dual distribution model at the underwriter level. Our underwriters will work with both retail and wholesale brokers to further expand our presence within the direct US property market. This underwriter will be an important bridge for our less experienced team members in helping them learn underwriting best practices, develop their ‘personal brands’, and building broker relationships. Our Executive Underwriters are enabled to underwrite new and renewal business with expansive underwriting authority which allows for autonomy in underwriting decisions and ownership of the P&L. You will work closely with the VP of Underwriting and other experienced underwriters to improve underwriting efficiencies, make underwriting decisions, marketing, training, and execute the yearly plan. We are looking to hire and grow our team in New York, Chicago, and Atlanta and we are willing to consider remote candidates with strong underwriting attributes. Responsibilities - Underwrite, grow and maintain the portfolio with the backbone of the book being superior accounts that enjoy premium service levels in recognition of their top tier status. - Laser focus on profitable underwriting that will complement the current portfolio, including adherence to the Canopius Property view of risk guidelines - Maintain existing broker relationships as well as develop new key relationships for the Open Market Property team - Develop new business opportunities and cultivate key client relationships critical to the on-going success of the business. - Engage in production trips across the U.S. expanding Canopius’ reach and promoting its growing & lasting presence as a go-to Property market in the States. - Be an active participant in the Property Insurance Industry, partaking in educational & social events, and taking leadership positions when possible. - Maintain consistent communication and contact with brokers, via phone calls, weekly lunches, & industry meet-ups. - Engage consistently with Canopius Distribution team and external broker distribution teams for pipelining and regional growth initiatives. - Work closely with underwriters within your team for training, underwriting, marketing, risk selection, and pricing. - Ability to communicate at a high level both written and verbal and work in a collaborative environment. Qualifications - Bachelor’s Degree (Insurance or business degree preferred but not required) - A minimum of five to seven years working in the Property Open Market insurance business as an underwriter or broker - Ability & willingness to travel domestically & abroad for work - Effective analytical skills - Excellent negotiation and communication skills - Confident decision-making skills - Self-motivated - Insurance Certifications such as the AMIM and/or CPCU designations considered but not required Salary: $160,000 - $180,000
