Job Requirements

  • Portfolio submission required;

  • Proficiency in design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign);
  • Excellent creative and communication skills;
  • Ability to manage design projects independently;
  • Knowledge of UI/UX is a plus.

Job Title: Senior Substation Physical Designer Location: Remote (U.S. based) FLSA Classification Non-exempt Job Description: Orbital Engineering is seeking a Senior Substation Physical Designer for a REMOTE WORK role. Extensive experience with 3D Substation Design is preferred. The individual will be responsible for development of substation design packages for clients across the US. Primary responsibilities include creating substation physical design deliverables. Projects range in size, complexity, and voltage class from small distribution equipment upgrades to large transmission projects. Depending upon the complexity of the project, the candidate may prepare, provide guidance, or assist in preparing and developing drawing packages for electric substation projects. Responsibilities - Utilizes understanding of the NEC, NESC, NEMA, ANSI, IEEE, industry standard work practices, client standards, and/or other applicable guidelines to complete engineering designs. - Implement complex designs in 2D & 3D AutoCAD and/or MicroStation. - Train, develop and mentor less-experienced design team members. - Provide complete Bill of Materials for work packages. - Provide conduit arrangements and complete Conduit Schedules including Conduit Fill Calculations. - Provide Connection Details including Parts and Hardware with high accuracy in quality. - Provide technical support for clients and support regional business development initiatives as a technical resource under the direction of the Department Manager. - Work in a project team environment with other engineers, designers, and drafters involved in detailed design of utility substation projects. - Support teams of designers and drafters and assume responsibility for their success on projects. - Support Pre-bid walkdowns with clients, prepare, review, and approve proposals and project estimates for new client projects. - Develop substation drawings with input from engineers, other drawings, scope documents, with high accuracy in quality. - Prepare new drawing packages, modify existing packages and complete as-built documents. - Responsible for substation design drawings and package checking. - Perform quality reviews and peer checks as assigned. - Perform other substation design related assignments as needed. - Work with Project Management team to develop project plans and provide project updates. Qualifications: - High School Diploma - Position to be filled at an appropriate level according to candidate experience. - Senior Substation Designer with 7+ years of related experience - Design and drafting experience with 2D & 3D design in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation. - Experience with Transmission Voltage level substation Greenfield, Brownfield and Retro-Fit projects. - Proficiency with NESC, IEEE, and other relevant codes and standards. - Knowledge of drafting standards, techniques and procedures. - Proficiency with the manipulation of vector and raster drawing files in AutoCAD and MicroStation. - Ability to create and/or modify drawings from markups with a high level of attention to detail. - Demonstrated ability to effectively organize multiple complex assignments and competing priorities to produce accurate products on time. - Ability to collaborate in cross-functional work teams. - Ability to perform cross-discipline reviews. - Experience in reviewing and using substation Vendor drawings. - Experience with current 3D software applications used to perform substation design work. - Ability to successfully work with remotely located team members. - This position requires the ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.
