Company Description MISSION STATEMENT OUR NATIONAL CONVERSATION (ONC) seeks to reduce partisanship and promote effective solutions to America’s challenges. Powered by America’s youth, we host a media outlet, produce educational materials and facilitate dialogue intended to make America a better country. Let's get America talking again! Job Description Job Title: Conservative Writer/Influencer/Podcast Intern Reports To: Core Content Team Lead and the Managing Editor Job Description: Do you think you might want to become a conservative writer, blogger, podcaster, on-the-air talent or influencer? If yes, you've come to the right place. We are nonpartisan and actively seek out conservative voices in order to maintain political balance. Conservatives feel completely welcome at OUR NATIONAL CONVERSATION, or ONC for short. The Conservative Writer Intern will focus on writing political content for ONC, including but not necessarily limited to high-quality OpEds and Policy Proposals for ONC’s website. In addition to ensuring that diverse content appears on the site, this intern may participate in podcasts, social media postings, events, and other assignments as needed. We appreciate those who come forward and propose their own story ideas and other projects they want to work on. If you are a go-getter who takes initiative, we want to hear from you! Please note, our CEO is a former VP at the Los Angeles Times. He's a bit of a traditionalist and insists all interns keep their cameras ON during Zoom meetings, unless there is a good reason not to (e.g., you are driving). Our CEO wants all interns to be either "all in -- or all out." So be forewarned. If you are an "all in" kind of person, you should love it here. If you want to hide in the shadows -- not participating, just hoping to add one more thing to your resume -- you will NOT like it here. The Core Content Writers will consist of conservative, progressive, and moderate writers, and the team will focus on our 8 policy areas, Governance, Economics, Infrastructure, Healthcare, Foreign Policy and Defense, Justice and Public Safety, Social Issues, and Science, Environment and Technology. This intern should have interest and experience in at least one of these areas, preferably two or three. The Core Content Department will meet on Friday’s at 12:45 pm (PST) with all writers, mentors, the Core Content Team Lead, and the Managing Editor. Lastly, applicants must submit a short writing sample with their application. Please include 2-3 paragraphs on a political topic as part of your cover letter. Though writers will be responsible for producing their own content, the process will be very collaborative, with lots of political discussion in a respectful, nonpartisan environment. This position is remote, with work primarily conducted over Zoom and Slack, so applicants must be comfortable coordinating in a remote environment and are expected to maintain a high level of communication. We place a high value on those who take initiative. We don't want to have to prod you. This is for self-starters only. This intern must commit to at least a full semester. Many interns extend their internship past the time of their original commitment. The longer you stay, the more opportunities to lead teams and get involved in exciting projects. Benefits: Flexible schedule, college credit, professional networking, and resume-building experience. Compensation: This is not a paid position. Responsibilities: - Create consistent content for the website with a team of core content writers. - Ensure ONC's commitment to nonpartisanship, ideological diversity, and civil debate is reflected in all published work. - Participate in civil dialogue with conservative, progressive, and moderate writers focused on our 8 policy areas: Governance, Economics, Infrastructure, Healthcare, Foreign Policy and Defense, Justice and Public Safety, Social Issues, and Science, Environment and Technology. - Participate in podcasts, events, and other tasks as needed. Qualifications Requirements: The Conservative Writer Intern should have the following skills, education, and experience: - This role would be particularly good for those working towards a degree in Political Science, Journalism, English or Literature, Public Policy, Media Studies, International Relations, and/or related fields - Exceptional writing skills are required (English) - Good verbal communication/speaking skills are a plus - Responsive, consistent, and effective communicator, even during conflict - Experience in policy research, political commentary, political science, or a related domain preferred - Enthusiasm for ONC’s mission and values, including a willingness to participate in polite debate with people of diverse and opposing political perspectives - Ability to work remotely and on their own schedule in order to make deadlines - Google Workspace experience preferred - Ability to attend some "All Hands" meetings on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. EST). - Ability to attend weekly (Friday at 6:30 p.m. EST) Core Content Department (mandatory) meetings (ability to attend every other meeting will be considered for the right person) - Must be authorized to intern in the U.S. Additional Information All your information will be kept confidential according to EEOC guidelines. **A writing sample must be submitted to be considered for this internship -- just 2-3 paragraphs at the bottom of your cover letter will be fine**
