Job Description

Lead Software Engineer

Smart Working

• Lead a cross-functional engineering team delivering features and enhancements end-to-end, from technical design through to deployment and ongoing support • Provide line management and pastoral care for a small team of engineers, supporting performance, wellbeing, and professional development • Take technical ownership of full-stack applications and services, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and maintainable • Drive technical design decisions, review and approve code, and resolve complex technical issues • Champion engineering best practices, including automated testing across functional, acceptance, performance, and security domains • Design and develop cloud-deployable services, continuously improving application architecture and infrastructure • Build, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines to support reliable and automated deployments • Collaborate closely with product, platform, and operations teams to ensure systems are observable, resilient, and operationally sound • Contribute to planning, estimation, scheduling, and resourcing to support predictable delivery • Communicate technical designs, risks, and progress clearly to senior stakeholders and non-technical audiences • Promote a strong engineering culture focused on quality, collaboration, and continuous improvement • Mentor engineers, support knowledge sharing, and contribute to recruitment and onboarding • Maintain clear and appropriate technical documentation to support long-term maintainability

Job Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Strong experience operating as a Senior or Lead Full Stack Software Engineer
  • Proven experience leading engineers and delivering software end-to-end
  • Deep understanding of modern software design patterns and engineering best practices
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-based architectures and services
  • Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment practices
  • Experience building scalable, resilient, secure, and observable systems
  • Strong commitment to code quality, maintainability, and automated testing
  • Confident technical decision-maker with strong code review skills
  • Experience mentoring engineers and supporting their professional growth
  • Excellent communication skills, able to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to translate complex business and regulatory requirements into robust technical solutions
  • Awareness of security, resilience, and operational risk in regulated environments
