Big ambitions, to be delivered by people like you. Got your attention? Read on.. Job Description We are seeking a Data Engineering Manager to lead our Data Engineering team. Managing a team of Data Engineers, you will own the end-to-end data lifecycle—from high-volume ingestion to analytics transformation. You will set the technical vision, mentor the team, and build a scalable backbone for UW’s digital future. A major initiative for the team this year is the Data Capabilities project. You will lead the migration of our customer domain data into a dimensionally modelled Enterprise Data Warehouse, executing on the system design led by the Data Architect and the Data Governance manager. Your responsibilities will include: - Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a high-performing team, fostering a culture of technical excellence, psychological safety, and continuous delivery. - Platform Strategy: Define the Data Engineering team vision, balancing immediate business needs with a long-term shift towards a self-service data mesh architecture. - Infrastructure Ownership: Oversee the development of core data pipelines and platform tools, ensuring high performance for ingestion services. - Pipeline & Warehousing: Ensure the implementation of robust ETL/ELT pipelines and scalable models (Kimball/Data Vault), maintaining overall warehouse health. - Reliability & DevOps: Champion DevOps best practices, utilising Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD to ensure platform resilience. - Collaboration: Partner with Data Architects and Governance teams to embed security, compliance, and robust system design into the platform. It’s all about you.. - People & Coaching: - Proven experience managing high-performing data engineering teams, including performance management, mentoring, and hiring. - Technical Mastery: - Strong background in Data Engineering with the ability to manage SQL-heavy workflows and complex data pipelines. - Strong knowledge of modern stacks, including Cloud Warehouses (BigQuery, Snowflake), Transformation (Dataform, dbt), and Python orchestration. - Impact & Scope: - You have a track record of leading a high performing team that deliver high-quality work. - Ability to effectively manage stakeholders across teams - Planning & Delivery: - Ability to design distributed systems capable of handling massive datasets and high-frequency streams. - Operational Excellence: - Production experience with containerisation (Kubernetes, Docker) and Infra-as-Code(Terraform). - Business & Domain Knowledge: - You can advise senior stakeholders on applying Data Engineering to solve complex business problems and are comfortable facilitating cross-functional design sessions. - Leadership & Culture: - Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative team environment - Promote a culture of data-informed/ data-driven decision-making and technical excellence Skills / Competencies - Project Management - Communication: - Decision Making - Stakeholder Management Possible Next Career Steps - Senior Data Engineering Manager Don’t worry if you don’t have the whole list.
